BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Bucknell softball began its weekend 1-1 at the Campbell Invitational on Friday. The Bison held on to win 5-4 over Howard in the opening game before suffering its second walk-off defeat of the season to Campbell, this time in extra-innings. Senior pitcher Raeanne Geffert finished the day with 17 strikeouts.
Bucknell (3-3) continues play at the Campbell Invitational tomorrow with a game against Mount St. Mary's at 10 a.m. and a 12:30 p.m. matchup with Saint Francis.
Bucknell 5, Howard 4
Bucknell's offense came up big in the middle innings, and Geffert stepped in late to stop a Howard rally and preserve a 5-4 win in the opening game of the Campbell Invitational Friday afternoon. Bucknell racked up a season-high 11 hits in the victory, and freshman Kaiya Burton picked up her first career win in the circle.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Bucknell went on to score five runs between the second and fourth to take a lead over Howard. Burton did her part to keep Howard in check over the course of three innings, but Howard made it a 5-4 game with a run in the sixth. Bucknell brought in Geffert, and the senior gave up just one hit to earn her first save of the season.
Geffert totaled four strikeouts against seven batters faced, while Burton finished with five.
Two runs in the second inning were set up by a pair of walks by the Bison, who were patient throughout the game and finished with four. Both Volpe and Alemany scored on an error, cutting the Howard lead to 3-2.
Tara Baglivo, who was pinch running for Rivait after she doubled to right field, scored on an RBI groundout by Ava Fairbanks to tie the game. Then, another error and a sacrifice fly by Taylor Wolfgang resulted in two runs in the fourth that gave Bucknell the lead for good.
Jess Hom and Knapp each went 2-for-4 in the game, and Wolfgang and Fairbanks finished with both of Bucknell's RBIs.
Bucknell 3, Campbell 5
Bucknell went nine innings against invitational host Campbell in the second game before a two-out walk-off home run by sophomore Kayla Fredendal put an end to the day for the Bison. It was the second time on the early season that Bucknell has lost in that fashion.
The teams were all tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation after the Camels had evened the score in the fifth inning. Bucknell had previously held a 3-2 lead after singles by Kailyn Lorberter and Halie Mariano knocked in a pair of fourth-inning runs. Lauren Lichtenwalner also recorded an RBI in the game when she doubled to left center, scoring Rivait in the second.
Geffert, who ends the day with a 2-2 overall record on the season, posted 13 strikeouts in the loss, falling two shy of her career high. Rivait ended the game 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Bucknell committed one error in the game.
Campbell's Kayla Howald improved to 1-2 with the win.
