NEWARK, N.J. – Bucknell men's tennis finished the second day of the NJIT tournament with four more victories in the third round of singles as well as two more doubles victories. Marwan Abaza, who won both of his singles matches on Saturday, grabbed another singles win today and was part of two winning doubles tandems for the Bison.
"Marwan, Michael, Cooper, and Ryan battled hard and were victorious in singles," said head coach Bruce Myers. "We tried some new teams in doubles, which is the benefit of this type of spring event."
Abaza made it a 3-0 weekend when he defeated Fairfield's Kaya Gore, 6-4, 6-4. Abaza moved to 4-0 in singles play this spring. The junior also picked up Bucknell's third and fourth doubles victories playing next to both Per Astrom and Michael Owen, as the Bison continue to mix doubles pairings this spring. Both doubles victories were over NJIT duos, and each was by a score of 6-4.
Owen also shined in a 6-4, 7-5 win over Fairfield junior Allan Magin. It was the freshman's third singles victory of the season. Sophomores Cooper Bradshaw and Ryan Jurist also came out victorious in their respective singles matches. Jurist won 3-6, 7-6, 10-4 in a tight matchup with NJIT senior George Svensson. Later, Bradshaw claimed a 7-5, 7-6 singles win from Hofstra's Ostap Kovalenko, his second of the weekend.
"It was a really great effort from my student-athletes today," said Myers. "It really is impressive how improved this group is in only one week, and I really am excited to bring back some specific things to work on this week in preparation for Siena this weekend.
Up next, the Bison host Siena at the Central PA Tennis Center in Williamsport, Pa. on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. for their third dual match of the spring season.
