LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey fell 3-2 to the Richmond Spiders on Sunday in a heartbreaking overtime match that saw three lead changes. Bucknell scored back-to-back goals in the second half and looked as though it might escape Richmond with a 2-0 weekend, but the Spiders forced the extra period and scored a game-winner two minutes into it.
The Bison held a 2-1 lead with under five minutes remaining in regulation before the Spiders found an equalizer on a shot that was initially waved off for being too high. However, after a discussion the goal was counted and the two teams would sit tied at the end of 60 minutes.
Two minutes into sudden death overtime, a Richmond shot deflected off goalkeeper Olivia Harris' pad, then bounced off the post before being pushed in by the Spiders' Tess Keppel.
The Bison had originally tied the game a 1-1 in the third quarter when Maddie Rehak scored her first collegiate goal. The Bison scored again two minutes into the fourth on a penalty corner in which Leah Fogelsanger was assisted by freshman Mackenzie Kile.
Bucknell only managed to rattle off one shot in overtime before the Spiders ended things. It was the second overtime match between the two teams over the last year, with Bucknell winning a 2-1 double-overtime game against the Spiders in Lewisburg last season.
Bucknell held an advantage in both penalty corners (11-9) and saves (6-5) in the contest, while Richmond outshot the Bison 15-12.
Following the loss, Bucknell goes to 2-2 on the season. The team returns home for a matchup with #12 Syracuse next week. That game will be played at noon on Sunday, Sept. 15.
