LEWISBURG, Pa. - A 23-6 shot differential in favor of the Orange tells the story of the No. 23 team's 3-1 win over Bucknell Sunday afternoon. Otherwise, the Bison capitalized on the few opportunities they had to deal damage in the game.
12 of Syracuse's 23 shots were on goal, which made for a busy day for Bucknell goalkeeper Olivia Harris. With the frequent duress, Harris matched her season-high of nine saves and held the Orange in check during the first and fourth quarters.
Things looked good for the Bison early after Brittany Willwerth made the most of a first-quarter penalty corner that gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead. Willwerth scored off a rebound from Kaelyn Long's shot for her third goal of the season.
The Bison lead would last 21 minutes before Syracuse tied things up seconds before the first half concluded. The goal came off one of Syracuse's six penalty corners. Less than three minutes into the third, the Orange took the lead thanks to a goal by freshman Charlotte DeVries.
Bucknell put up a team-high three shots in the fourth quarter, but didn't have enough to overcome the deficit before time ran out. Harris' record goes to 2-3 on the season, while Syracuse keeper Sara Sinck goes to 5-0. Sinck had no saves in the game with one goal allowed.
Next, Bucknell goes to Boston University to take on the defending Patriot League champions. Bucknell lost 3-2 in double-overtime to the Terriers last season. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
