LEWISBURG, Pa. – A goal by Emilene Parham in the 43rd minute was enough as Bucknell held on for a 1-0 win over defending Patriot League champion Boston University in Saturday afternoon action at Emmitt Field. The goal by Parham, the second of her career and first of the season, was supported by a strong defensive effort by the Bison back line of Alivia Handson, Chloe Christakos, Holly Burns, and Leanne Engemann as Bucknell managed its first clean sheet of the season.
Bucknell improves to 4-6 this season, and 2-0 in conference matches. Through two rounds of Patriot League play, the Bison sit top of the table alongside Navy.
Bucknell started the game brightly, with Christakos proving a menace on set pieces as she latched onto a corner kick that was cleared off the line by the Terriers' Chloee Sagmoe. Christakos followed up on the rebound, but her effort was once again blocked by Boston U.
The Bison back four did a solid job of controlling the Terriers, who had managed to score in five straight games coming into the matchup. Freshman goalkeeper Kaylee Donnelly was forced into just two comfortable saves through the first 45 minutes.
Parham found the back of the net after Annabelle Heisel played a chip over the head of a Boston University defender and landed near the right side of the penalty area. Parham was alert, and managed to get a touch ahead of the Boston University goalkeeper. The two collided, but Parham was on hand to tap in the rebound after winning the 50-50 as Bucknell took a 1-0 lead just two minutes before the halftime whistle.
The Bison came out of the halftime break with extra energy after the goal, and they looked to find a second as freshman Rylee Donaldson forced Terriers goalkeeper Morgan Messner into a low save in the 61st minute on a hard-struck shot from the top of the box. Heisel looked to get a goal of her own five minutes later as her shot was saved by Messner near the top of the goal.
After a save by Donnelly in the 59th minute on the Terriers' Shannon Keefe, the Bison back line limited Boston University to just three shots, all off target, as the team held on for the 1-0 win after controlling much of the possession in the second half. The clean sheet was the first for Bucknell since a 1-0 win at Lehigh on Oct. 17, 2018.
Boston University outshot Bucknell 16-13, but the Bison managed a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Bucknell also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a road match at Lehigh on Oct. 2.
