Women’s Soccer Drops Season Finale to American on 89th-Minute Penalty Kick

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Avery Klingensmith's penalty kick with 1:06 remaining in the match lifted American to a 2-1 win over Bucknell in the season finales for both teams on Wednesday night at Emmitt Field. Louisa Thomsen scored for the Bison just minutes after the Eagles took the lead in the first half, but the hosts could not find a second goal despite dominating large stretches of the match and finishing with a 26-8 shot advantage.

Both teams entered the final night of the regular season with a chance to earn one of the six Patriot League Tournament berths. Both sides needed a win and at least two of the three teams sitting two points ahead of them to lose. None of the other results around the league were helpful, but the Bison and Eagles battled hard for 90 minutes nonetheless.

Bucknell was on the front foot right from the opening touch, and Gaby Parker put a shot on goal just 11 seconds into the match, forcing the first of nine saves for American goalkeeper Addison Roemer. The shot tally was 6-0 into the 27th minute when the Eagles found the back of the net on their first attempt of the night. Only about a minute after entering the game as a substitute, Bella Miller scored on a running header off a nice service from Mary DelVecchio.

The Bison equalized just 2:54 later on a header of their own. Julia Palitti played a free kick short to Ava Palladino, whose service into the center of the area was flicked home by Thomsen with her back to the goal.

With two minutes left in the half Roemer denied Henna Andican on a clean breakaway, getting just enough of a leg on the ball to steer it wide. Sydney Hess just missed on a back-post header on the ensuing corner kick.

Bucknell attempted 15 shots in the second half, two of which hit the woodwork. Center back Emma Gavin crushed a laid-off ball off the crossbar in the 63rd minute, and moments later Katie Connell skimmed a volley off the outside of the right post.

Six minutes later, Riley Hayes was robbed by a diving Roemer, and then Andican's follow-up attempt was deflected out for a corner. With 15 minutes to play, Connell had a free header saved, her game-high seventh shot of the night.

American found some attacking pressure in the final five minutes and was rewarded with 66 seconds left when Maddie Hurowitz drew a foul in the box. The penalty was given, and Klingensmith converted from the spot for her team-high fourth goal of the season.

This was a transition year for the Bison, who were coming off four straight championship seasons – three Patriot League Tournament titles followed by a regular-season crown last season. Bucknell started three freshmen and five sophomores for much of the campaign and finished 3-9-6 overall and 1-4-4 in the conference. American's season ends at 3-10-4/3-5-1.

Boston University claimed first place with a 1-0 win over Colgate – the two teams were tied for the lead entering the night – and Army, Holy Cross, Lafayette, and Loyola round out the tournament field.
