NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Blake Wisdom carded a 2-under-par 68 to highlight Bucknell's opening day at The Macdonald Cup, hosted by Yale. The Bison fashioned rounds of 292 and 282 in the play-6/count-4 format, and they are tied for fifth place in a field of 12 teams.
Bucknell has placed second in each of its first three tournaments of the spring, and the Bison are just five shots behind Princeton and Yale, who are currently tied for the No. 2 spot after 36 holes. Minnesota, the 54th-ranked team in the nation, shot 274-275 for an 11-under total of 549, good for a commanding 19-shot lead heading into Sunday's final round.
Wisdom and Jason Lohwater are Bucknell's low players at 4-over 144, good for a tie for 17th place on the individual leaderboard. Wisdom followed up an opening-round 76 with the best round of his young career. His lone blemish in the afternoon was a double-bogey at the par-4 12th hole, but on the other 17 holes he made four birdies and 13 pars.
Lohwater canceled two bogeys with a pair of birdies en route to a second-round 70, on the heels of his first-round 74.
Chris Tanabe, coming off a win at the Dartmouth Invitational last week, shot an even-par 70 in the first round, then followed with a 75. Tanabe and Jackson Bussell (72-73) are T-21st.
Also for the Bison, Peter Bradbeer shot 75-72, and Josh Holtschlag posted 79-72.
Minnesota teammates Angus Flanagan (67-69) and Evan Long (69-67) are tied for the lead at 136. The Golden Gophers have four players in the top seven. Princeton's Guy Waterhouse fired a second-round 66 and is alone in third place at 137.
The third and final round gets underway on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The Bison will be paired with Harvard and Colgate, starting on holes 5-10.
