HANOVER, N.H. – Bucknell junior Chris Tanabe parlayed a record-setting performance into his second career tournament victory, and the Bison men's golf team captured its third straight second-place finish on Sunday at the Dartmouth Invitational.
With the three straight runner-up finishes at events hosted by Colgate, Cornell and Dartmouth, Bucknell is off to its best start in 10 years. In the fall of 2009, the Bison began the season with a victory and two second-place efforts.
Tanabe has been the catalyst in this great start, and he turned in one of the best performances in team history this weekend. After opening with a 68 on Saturday, Tanabe fired a bogey-free, 6-under-par 65 in the final round on Sunday. He started the day on the fourth hole and made birdies at 7, 11, 12, 18, 1 and 3.
Tanabe's 9-under 133 is a new school 36-hole record, and it was good for a two-shot victory over Drexel's Alex Butler. Tanabe began the day four shots behind Butler, who opened with a 64, but Butler finished with a 71 while Tanabe was busy tying the team 18-hole record.
The only other Bison to shoot 65 is Ben Pellicani, who posted that number in the second round of the 2005 Patriot League Championship at the par-70 Bucknell Golf Club. In relation to par, Tanabe's 6-under total also ties the school record, previously set by Andrew Cohen at the Lafayette Invitational in the spring of 2010 and Will Bachman at the Colgate Invitational in the fall of 2010.
Tanabe's first collegiate victory came last spring at the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational. He was also tied for the lead after the regulation 36 holes at the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Dartmouth, last fall, but he lost in a four-man playoff. Tanabe is the first Bucknell player with multiple career wins since Cohen, who won four titles in 2009 and 2010.
Meanwhile, Tanabe was not the only Bison posting terrific numbers this weekend, and they needed all of them since freshman Jack Gardner had to withdraw due to injury, meaning Bucknell did not have the luxury of discarding the team's highest score. All they did was post a 5-under 279 on Sunday after opening with 283 a day earlier. The 5-under team score is the second-best in relation to par in team history, trailing only the 7-under 281 set last season at Quechee Club. The 279 total is tied for third-best in school history and the best ever on a course other than the Bucknell GC.
Backing up Tanabe's 65 on Sunday was freshman Blake Wisdom with a 2-under 69, sophomore Jason Lohwater with a 72, and senior Peter Bradbeer with a 73.
Wisdom, who shot 73 on Saturday, compiled an even-par 142 for the tournament to give him a T-18th finish. He made four birdies against only two bogeys on Sunday.
Bucknell was running neck and neck with first-round leader Drexel throughout much of the day, but the Dragons went a combined 6-under on the 17th and 18th holes to pull away. Drexel finished with an 8-under 276 for an 11-under total of 557.
Bucknell and Rhode Island tied for second place at 6-under 562. For the Bison, that 36-hole total is one shy of the school record of 561, set at the 2017 Patriot League Championship at Bucknell. The 6-under figure is a new team record for 36 holes.
Host Dartmouth was fourth at 564, followed by Siena (572), Harvard (574), Saint Joseph's (576), Cornell (577), Holy Cross (579), Bryant (583), Brown (597) and Fordham (598).
The Bison are back in action next Saturday and Sunday at the Macdonald Cup, hosted by Yale.
