NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Goals by Maddie Rehak and Allie Christopher gave Bucknell field hockey the lead it needed to hold off the Sacred Heart Pioneers and collect the 2-1 victory, capping a 2-0 weekend.
For a second time in two days, Rehak scored to get the Bison (4-3, 1-0 Patriot League) on the board first. Today, Rehak's goal came with just over three minutes left in the first half. The freshman carried the ball up field and fired off a shot that squeezed past the Pioneer goalkeeper. Rehak now sits tied for first on the team with three goals.
Six minutes into the third the Bison struck again, this time off the stick of Allie Christopher. The goal was created by a penalty corner that was inserted by Brittany Willwerth, stopped by Marisa Morakis, then fired home by Christopher for her second score of the season.
Christopher's goal turned out to be an important one as the Pioneers would score in the fourth quarter to cut the Bison lead in half. However, with under five minutes to work with Sacred Heart was denied a chance to tie it by the Bison defense.
Bucknell outshot the Pioneers 9-6 in the game, with eight different Bison getting involved. Rehak was the lone Bison to put a pair of shots on goal. The team also allowed zero penalty corner attempts to the Pioneers. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Olivia Harris made two saves with one in each half.
Up next, Bucknell travels to Washington D.C. for a second Patriot League game against American (3-4). That matchup is set for Saturday, Sept. 28 at noon. The Bison head up to Towson, Md. to play the Tigers the following day.
