Men's Soccer Earns Draw at Colgate to Open Conference Play
9/21/2019 7:29:00 PM | Men's Soccer
HAMILTON, N.Y.—Matt Thorsheim netted his third goal of the season, and his first from open play, in the 69th minute as Bucknell came from behind to earn a valuable road point as the 2019 Patriot League men's soccer season kicked off for Colgate and Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.
Bucknell, now 2-3-1 on the season, earned its first result against Colgate in its last five tries. The last time Bucknell earned a point against Colgate was a 1-1 draw in Hamilton during the 2014 season.
Bucknell found itself trailing early on, after a corner kick by the Raiders was converted by Colgate's Max Edelstein. Luke Smith made a great initial save to deny Colgate's Kian Alberto on a headed chance, but Edelstein was there to punch the ball across the line to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
The Bison have now trailed in four of their six games to date this season, but have managed to come back and score at least one goal in each of those games.
Bucknell didn't get many clean looks in the first half, as freshman Jameson Railey was the only Bison who managed to test Colgate goalkeeper Jacob Harris with a shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes.
The second half started much more favorably for the Bison, after Railey was taken down in the box by a Colgate defender just under a minute into the second 45. Thorsheim, who had already converted two kicks from the spot this season, struck a low hard shot to the right of Harris, but the Colgate goalkeeper made a tremendous save to deny the junior his third goal of the season.
Colgate thought it took a 2-0 lead on a throw-in that ended up in the back of the Bison goal, but the ball went in untouched, which by rule does not count.
That proved to be a vital call for the Bison, who found their way back when Zach Hurchalla won a header near midfield that found its way over the Colgate backline. Thorsheim was on hand to pounce on the misplay, as he delicately lofted the ball over an onrushing Harris to equalize in the 69th minute. The tally is Thorsheim's third of the year, and he is now up to seven points on three goals and one assist, surpassing his total from 2018. The goal was also the 10th of his career. Hurchalla, a center back, earned his first career point for Bucknell on the assist.
Luke Smith, starting his second career game after earning a clean sheet on Wednesday, came up with several saves during the second half as Bucknell went into overtime for the first time this season. Patrick Mahoney provided a great goal-line clearance for Bucknell in the 85th minute, denying the Raiders' Ryan Krueger from scoring a likely game-winning goal.
Bernie Wright and Railey each had shots off frame in the first overtime period, while Smith was on hand to keep out Colgate's Kian Alberto from scoring the game-winning goal with just over a minute left as the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
"Colgate controlled much of the possession in the first half, and we had to make some adjustments at halftime," said head coach Brendan Nash. "We had to rely on our depth in the second half, and this game will be a good lesson for our team moving forward."
Bucknell has now earned a result to open Patriot League play in back-to-back seasons, and four out of the past five seasons. Three of those four results were 1-1 draws, with the outlier a 1-0 win over Lafayette at home in 2018.
The two teams were even on shots, 13-13, with Colgate holding a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a Tuesday fixture at George Mason before hosting American on Friday, Sept. 27 for Family Weekend.
