Men's Soccer Battles Back to Earn Road Draw at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Matt Thorsheim found the back of the net from the penalty spot in the 75th minute as the Bucknell University soccer team tied, 1-1, to home standing George Mason in a Tuesday night nonconference match.
The game was just the second all time matchup between the two teams, with the other one a Bison overtime win in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, and marked the second straight game in which Bucknell has come from behind to earn a draw on the road.
Bucknell is now 2-3-2, while George Mason is 1-6-1 this season.
George Mason controlled the early portions of the game, limiting Bucknell without a shot in the first half.
The Patriots then capitalized in the early goings after Leon Mahilac converted from five yards out at the 16:58 mark to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. George Mason used a quick restart on a Bucknell foul, and Mahilac found space inside the six yard box to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
Bucknell has now fallen behind in six of its eight games to date, and couldn't get much going offensively in the first period as it failed to muster a shot for the opening 45 minutes.
However, Bucknell, much like its past four games, started the second half strongly. The Bison managed to test George Mason goalkeeper Brison Moorhead just 20 seconds into the half after Mo Tall forced the Patriot netminder into a good save.
The Bison looked to keep things positive after that, managing three more shots over the next 15 minutes while limiting opportunities by the Patriots.
Neither team managed to test the other goalkeeper until the 74th minute, when Jacob Mittman forced Moorhead into his second save of the day.
The Bison kept the momentum going, when Patrick O'Hara was pushed in the box on a cross from the wing. Thorsheim, who has converted two spot kicks already this season, stepped up and calmly slotted home the penalty to tie things up at one.The goal was the junior's fourth of the season, and marked the fourth time this season Bucknell has managed to find the equalizing goal after trailing.
Bucknell kept on the pressure through the final minutes looking for the winner. Bernie Wright came closest in the 85th minute, but Moorhead was once again up to the task to save the shot from the senior. Neither team could find a winning goal through the final five minutes, as Bucknell went to overtime for the second straight game.
Overall the Bison outshot the Patriots 10-2 in the second half.
The Bison pushed for the winning goal in the second overtime period, with Tall firing a shot just wide on a breakaway in the 104th minute before Nick King's shot sailed over the crossbar in the 108th minute. Stefan Gollisz, who also hit the post in the match, nearly won it in the final eight seconds of the game, but Moorhead was on hand to deal with the shot and keep the game all square as Bucknell drew its second straight game on the road. Bucknell, (1-0-2) has yet to record a loss on the road this season.
"It wasn't our best performance, but we found a way to grind it out and get a point on the road," said head coach Brendan Nash."Now we'll look forward to playing a tough American team this weekend."
Bucknell finished with a 10-6 edge on shots, and a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bison will return to Patriot League play when they host American on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
