LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University men's soccer team fell by a 2-1 score to visiting Drexel in a Saturday afternoon contest at Emmitt Field. A spirited second-half comeback attempt by the Orange and Blue, thanks to some tactical adjustments and a late goal by senior Nick King, fell short as Drexel held on to a 2-0 second-half advantage for a 2-1 win.
Bucknell falls to 1-3, while Drexel improves to 1-3-1. All three of Bucknell's losses have come by a 2-1 score this season.
The game started slowly for both teams in the midfield, before the match was delayed by a thirty-minute weather delay just over 12 minutes into the game. Drexel came out of the extended break sharp, controlling much of the possession in the first half.
However, Bucknell kept a good shape in the midfield and the backline to limit the Dragons to just two shots on goal through the first 45 minutes despite having limited time on the ball.
One of those shots found the back of the net in the 38th minute as Philip Burckhardt converted a low, curling free kick after the Dragons won a free kick just outside of the penalty area. The shot tucked into the bottom right corner as the Dragons held onto a 1-0 halftime advantage.
Bucknell came extremely close to equalizing, with Kevin Gulizio, who provided a spark at the forward spot for the Bison in the game, nodded a low header off of a perfect cross from the left side, but the shot was caught by Drexel goalkeeper Cameron Saunders.
Drexel almost put away a second in the final two minutes of the half, but the shot by Chris Donovan from the left side hit the post and deflected off of another Drexel attacker just wide of the frame.
The Bison came out of the second half energized, thanks in large part to some tactical adjustments. The addition of Gulizio up top to start the half, along with Bernie Wright moving up to a more advanced attacking role, helped Bucknell to work in more of a high press.
Trevor Wiggins, who made his season debut along with Daniel Hallowell and Gulizio, provided Bucknell's best chance of the game so far, as he leaped highest on a corner kick by Matt Thorsheim in the 54th minute to force Saunders into a good save. Moments later, Thorsheim used a good shot fake in the penalty area to beat several Drexel defenders, before a great play by a Drexel defender cleared his low shot off of the line.
Head Coach Brendan Nash, looking to keep the high press on, subbed in six fresh faces as Bucknell pushed hard for the equalizer. The substitutions nearly paid off in the 69th minute as Patrick O'Hara turned in a long sprint down the right side after a long pass out of the back, but couldn't convert from the right side of the penalty area as his shot rose over the bar.
However, the Dragons withstood the pressure and eventually found a second goal after a low cross skipped and was cleared in the air near the top of the penalty area in the 73rd minute. Adam Nork found space and volleyed the shot home to give Drexel a 2-0 lead.
Bucknell wouldn't go away quietly, with Wright surging forward on the left flank before finding Mo Tall at the top of the box. Tall played a short pass to King, who took a look up and slotted his low shot into the bottom left corner from about 20 yards out to pull Bucknell within one. The assist for Wright is his third of the season, while the goal for King is his first of his senior campaign.
Drexel held off the Bison comeback for the waning minutes of the game for its first win of the season.
Bucknell outshot the Dragons, 12-11, and also held an edge on corner kicks. Drexel also held a 59-41 percent advantage in possession. Senior goalkeeper Emmett Witmer made four saves in the defeat.
