LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's soccer team earned its first clean sheet of the season with a 3-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday evening. A shutout performance by college debutant Luke Smith in goal, combined with a fantastic midfield effort from Nick King (1G, 1A), helped Bucknell earn its first shutout since Oct. 7, 2018 against Holy Cross.
Bucknell improves to 2-3, while The Red Flash falls to 1-3 this season.
The first half started slowly for both teams, with neither team registering a clear chance until Saint Francis tested Smith in the 35th minute on a shot from distance. The freshman Smith, making his first appearance in the net, managed to hold on to the shot that happened to be the only shot on goal registered by the Red Flash in the half.
Bucknell managed only one shot of its own on goal in the first half, a well-struck free kick from freshman Jameson Railey from about 18 yards out that forced SFU goalkeeper Alex Morgret into a terrific save that he palmed onto the crossbar.
Much like the Drexel game on Saturday, Bucknell came out in the second half much sharper, managing shots from King and Railey from distance within the first four minutes of the half.
The Bison managed to break through after not having the ball much of the game when Patrick O'Hara collected the ball near the halfway line before driving at the SFU backline near the top of the penalty area. The sophomore then registered his first career assist after he unselfishly squared the ball to an onrushing King, who converted into an open net for his second goal in the past two fixtures. The 1-0 lead in the 64th minute was the first lead by Bucknell in a game since the 4-1 win at Canisius in which the Bison took the lead eight minutes in.
Bucknell doubled its lead in the 79th minute, in which King was also a major factor. After winning a corner kick, King drove a quick ball right into the danger area that junior Trevor Wiggins climbed to meet. Wiggins' header rattled off of the underside of the crossbar and in for his first career goal in the Orange and Blue.
Bucknell put the game away late after a Bison attacker was brought down in the box. Junior Matt Thorsheim stepped up and calmly slotted his penalty kick in the lower left corner to give Bucknell a 3-0 lead that it would maintain through the final minutes.
Bucknell outshot the Red Flash 12-7, and held a 6-2 advantage in shots on frame.
The Bison will begin Patriot League play on Saturday at Colgate.
