PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Collin Sullivan's first career goal in the final seconds of the first half went down as the match-winner as the Bucknell men's soccer team defeated Saint Joseph's 2-0 on Tuesday night at Sean Sweeney Field.
Bucknell (8-3-3) earned a late corner in the first half as the seconds trickled down on the clock. Noah Handzel got the ball quickly, taking the corner with six seconds left. He played the ball short to Zain Elder, who whipped a cross to the head of Sullivan to put the Bison in front. Elder and Handzel both notched their first career points on their assists.
Neither side had many great chances in the match. Jack Lucas had an opportunity 18 minutes in, racing down the win to chase a ball and out-run a defender. Lucas took a hard shot, but forced a good save from a tough angle.
Saint Joseph's (6-6-3) had the first opportunity of the second half just eight minutes in. It was a good passing sequence by the Hawks, eventually getting the ball out wide in the box. Rex Alphen got low to make a good save on the shot and keep the Bison in front.
The Bison then doubled the lead through drew Roskos' sixth goal of the season. Lucas got the ball on the left wing, and carried into the attacking third. Lucas made a great move toward the end line and played in a great pass into the box. Roskos took a great touch and quickly finished into the bottom corner.
It was a relatively even match between the two sides on paper. The Hawks had nine shots compared to Bucknell's eight. Both sides had four shots on target in the match. Alphen made four stops in his first start of the season and kept his first 90-minute clean sheet of his career.
Bucknell is back at Emmitt Field on Saturday for Senior Day as league-leaders American comes to town for a 6 p.m. kick off.
