WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 13 Georgetown, an NCAA College Cup semifinalist a year ago, scored early and late in the first half on the way to a 2-0 verdict over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field.
The Hoyas, who were coming off a scoreless draw on the road at Duke, improved to 2-1-1 on the season. The Bison dropped their third straight close game against quality competition after a season-opening win over Robert Morris.
Georgetown tallied 27 shots in the game, but just eight were on frame. Goalkeepers Kaylee Donnelly (five saves) and Raegan Dunwoodie (one save) combined to turn aside all but two of those attempts.
The Hoyas took a quick 1-0 lead just 3:37 into the match. Paula Germino-Watnick collected the ball at the top of the 18, found a shooting lane, and slotted home a well-taken attempt into the left side netting.
The Bison had a lot of defending to do against the powerful Hoyas but kept it a 1-0 game all the way into the 44th minute when Gia Vicari sent in a low cross from the left side. A Georgetown forward couldn't get a touch on it in the middle of the six-yard box but slid hard into Donnelly. No foul was given, and the ball leaked through to Caitlin Moon, who touched it in at the back post.
Bucknell had some promising moments early in the second half, when Jenna Marek forced Alyssa Navarette to make a pair of saves, and then the Bison followed with a couple of corner kicks just after the 70-minute mark.
Bucknell nearly got on the board in the final minute of the match, but an attempt from Annabelle Heisel off a corner kick was saved off the line by Georgetown.
Fresh off their first away game of the 2019 season, the Bison return home on Friday to take on Cornell at 4 p.m. That will be the first leg of a doubleheader with the men's squad, who will play Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
