LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Emily Doyle came through on the Bison's third attempted penalty corner of the day to give her team a 1-0 lead over Lock Haven on Sunday. Ultimately, the third quarter goal proved to be all the Bison would need to come out on top in the defense-heavy road contest.
Doyle, who also scored in the season-opening match against James Madison, was set up by junior Leah Fogelsanger before squeezing one past the Lock Haven goalkeeper to give her team a lead. The Bald Eagles had their chance late, attempting three corners in the final quarter, but the Bucknell defense held strong to capture the shutout.
The penalty corners came early and often, though neither team converted on the first seven attempts. While Bucknell goalkeeper Olivia Harris did her part by stopping the two shots that reached her, the Bison defense managed to block most of the attack.
Lock Haven rattled off six more shots in the fourth quarter, but it was Bucknell junior Megan Keeney who narrowly missed scoring the dagger on a shot that hit the post with under five minutes remaining.
The Bison held on to win it and push their record to 1-1. For Harris, the 1-0 decision marks the fourth shutout of her career. Meanwhile, Doyle now leads the team with two goals in 2019. Fogelsanger picked up her second career assist and now has three points on the season.
Up next, Bucknell travels to Richmond, Va. for contests with VCU and the University of Richmond. Those games are scheduled for Sept. 7 and 8, respectively.
