Geffert Strikes Out 15, Nearly Pitches Perfect Game in 2-0 Win Over Lafayette

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Raeanne Geffert struck out a career-high 15 batters and had a perfect game broken up with two outs in the seventh inning as she pitched Bucknell past Lafayette, 2-0, in a Patriot League softball game Sunday at Becker Field.
The Bison opened league play with their third straight series sweep to improve to 19-15 overall and 9-0 in the conference. They are the last remaining unbeaten team in the league as Boston University fell to 5-1 with a 1-0 loss to Lehigh on Sunday.
Geffert was dominant from the get go, striking out the first five batters. She struck out the side on just 10 pitches in the first inning to set the tone for the game. The senior was just one strike away from yet another punch out and her second no-hitter in eight days, but Brooke Wensel broke it up with a line-drive single to center field.
Wensel nearly broke up the perfect game in the fourth inning on a ball that was hit hard to deep right-center field, but Allyse Volpe tracked it down in the gap with an off-balance catch to end the inning.
Bucknell scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Ryanne Rokos led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Baluch, and scored on a one-out single by Halie Mariano.
The Bison tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and it came from another leadoff hitter reaching base. Taylor Wolfgang went the other way for a triple to the right-center field gap and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jess Hom.
Those two runs were more than enough for Geffert, who has been nearly unhittable in league play. She is 6-0 with a 1.41 ERA and has pitched six complete games in her seven appearances against league opponents. She has struck out 39 and walked seven while pitching 39.2 innings in those games.
The offense has been just as impressive as Bucknell is hitting .378 in its nine league games. Volpe has provided a spark at the top of the lineup, batting .621 (18-29) with five stolen bases in those games. Anna Gimmestad is hitting .519 (14-27), while Wolfgang (.417), Hom (.409), Lauren Hadley (.370), and Marisa Alemany (.364) have also been impressive.
One day after Lafayette committed six errors over two games, the Leopards defense kept the team in the game with several nice plays, many of which came from Natasha Miner at third base.
But the Leopards' defense wasn't enough as Geffert shut them out for the second time in as many days. Over the two games she pitched in the series, Geffert gave up just four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out 23 in 12 innings of work.
Bucknell now turns its attention to a non-conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's at Becker Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Bison then head to Worcester, Massachusetts, for a three-game league series against Holy Cross on Friday and Saturday.
