Geffert spins 1-hit shutout in opener
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior pitcher Raeanne Geffert continued her dominance in the circle with a one-hit shutout in Bucknell's 2-0 game-one victory, then Mount St. Mary's cut down the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap 5-4 and salvage a doubleheader split on Wednesday at Becker Field.
The Bison ran their winning streak to 10 games in the opener, but the game-two loss left them one short of the school record. The 1988 and 2015 teams both recorded 11-game winning streaks.
Bucknell is now 20-16 on the season, which includes a perfect 9-0 Patriot League record. The Bison hit the 20-win plateau for the seventh year in a row. Mount St. Mary's is now 18-21.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League action this weekend with a three-game set at Holy Cross on Saturday and Sunday.
Game 1: Bucknell 2, Mount St. Mary's 0
Geffert was the story in the opener of the twin bill, as she was once again on no-hit watch. The Seymour, Connecticut native no-hit Lehigh back on March 30, and in her most recent outing on Sunday against Lafayette, she had a perfect game broken up with two outs in the seventh inning.
This time, Geffert retired the first 16 Mount St. Mary's batters, leaving her five outs shy of a perfect game. But she tried to come inside with an 0-2 pitch on Emilee Kirk and grazed her on the leg to give the Mount their first baserunner of the day. One out later, Kaylee Stoner broke up the no-hitter on a little dribbler down the third-base line that she was able to beat out for an infield single.
Geffert stranded the two runners with a ground ball, and then retired the side in order in the seventh for her second consecutive one-hit shutout. It was also the 10th shutout of her career and third in a row, making her the sixth Bison pitcher ever to record double-digit shutouts.
Dating back to her no-hitter at Lehigh, in her last five starts Geffert is 5-0 with four shutouts, a 0.42 ERA, and 38 strikeouts against only 11 hits in 33 innings pitched.
Meanwhile, with a number of reserves getting the mid-week start, Bucknell needed a run in support of Geffert. The Bison got her two in the bottom of the third, with all of the damage coming with two outs and no one on. Anna Gimmestad started the rally with an opposite-field single, and then Taylor Wolfgang lined a shot over the head of the center fielder to score Gimmestad all the way from first base. Wolfgang moved up to third when the throw got away at the plate, and that proved big when she was able to score on Sarah Baluch's infield hit moments later.
Baluch was 2-for-3 in the game, her second career multi-hit performance.
Geffert, now 12-8 on the season, fanned six without walking a batter. Amanda Berkley (8-11) allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings for Mount St. Mary's.
Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 5, Bucknell 4
Mount St. Mary's has a .301 team batting average, and after its offense was shut down in game one, the Mount tallied 15 hits in a back-and-forth nightcap.
Bucknell erased an early 3-0 deficit with four straight runs, but Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead. Lexi Donovan tied the game with an RBI bunt single, and later Donovan scored from third base on a double-steal attempt as trail runner Maggie Kane was tagged out in a rundown between first and second.
The Bison threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings. With two runners aboard and one out in the sixth, Lauren Hadley, who already had a pair of run-scoring hits in the game, smashed a line drive right at Morgan Alisauckas at second base, and she turned it into an inning-ending double play.
Ryanne Rokos led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. After Gimmestad moved her up with a ground ball, Wolfgang sent a sharp single into right field. Kirsten Mumma made a perfect throw to the plate to nail Rokos trying to score, and then catcher Jessica Nines threw out Wolfgang trying to move up to second base to end the game.
Mount St. Mary's plated two runs in the second inning via a bunt single and a couple of bloop hits. The Mount still had the bases loaded with no outs and two runs in, but Lauren Lichtenwalner induced a well-executed 1-2-3 double play to help escape further trouble.
Down 3-0 after conceding an unearned run in the third, the Bison got one back on Hadley's RBI single in the bottom of the frame, and then they took the lead with three runs in the fourth.
Baluch started the rally with a ringing double up the alley in left-center. After Julienne Egofske reached on an infield hit, Halie Mariano walked to load the bases with no outs. Pinch-runner Tara Baglivo came home on Jess Hom's fielder's choice, and Egofske scored on a ground out by Allyse Volpe. Hadley came through with another clutch hit to plate Hom for a 4-3 Bucknell lead.
Freshman Violet Matlack (1-3) came on to pitch in the sixth. She retired the first batter she faced on a foul pop, but then was touched for three straight hits before Lichtenwalner re-entered.
Avery Neuhart (4-5) earned the win with three scoreless innings in relief of starter Jordan Weaver.
Volpe extended her hitting streak to 10 games after coming off the bench in game two.
