WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bucknell softball is no longer unbeaten in Patriot League play but is still in first place after splitting a doubleheader at Army West Point on Saturday. The Black Knights ended the Bison's 12-game PL winning streak with a 4-1 win in game one, but the Bison got back on track with a 6-1 victory in game two.
Bucknell moved to 25-17 overall and 13-1 in the league, while Army is now 22-26 overall and 7-7 in the conference. The Bison can finish no lower than second in the regular season standings.
Game three of the series between the Bison and Black Knights is scheduled for noon on Sunday.
Game 1 – Army West Point 4, Bucknell 1
Bucknell had the same amount of hits as Army, more walks, and committed three fewer errors, but stranded eight runners on base in a 4-1 loss in game one.
Army took control of the game with three runs in the third inning, scoring on three straight plate appearances with back-to-back doubles and a single.
The Bison got on the board in the fifth on a double steal. Jess Hom reached base with a one-out single and later scored as Allyse Volpe was stealing second.
Hom was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, while Volpe and Lauren Hadley each singled twice.
Bucknell gave itself a chance for a comeback as it loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, but Jolie Duong got the final out with a strikeout to secure the win for Army. She went the distance, giving up one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Game 2 – Bucknell 6, Army West Point 1
Bucknell broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the sixth inning to get the win in game two and remain in first place in the Patriot League.
The Bison had just two hits in their big inning, singles by Hom and Volpe, as they took advantage of three errors, two walks, and two hit-by-pitches. Taylor Wolfgang reached base twice in the inning without having to put her bat on the ball, reaching on a hit-by-pitch and then a bases loaded walk for the team's final run.
Army struck first with a solo home run by Bianca Gonzalez in the third inning. That held up until Volpe tripled and then scored on an errant throw to lead off the fifth.
That home run was the only damage allowed by starting pitcher Lauren Lichtenwalner, who went the distance to notch her 10th win of the season. She gave up just three hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out three.
Bucknell finished with six hits, including two by Anna Gimmestad and one by Hadley.
