WORCESTER, Mass. – Anna Gimmestad and Taylor Wolfgang hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning to lift Bucknell to a 5-3 win over Holy Cross in a Patriot League softball matchup Sunday at Freshman Field. The Bison swept their fourth consecutive league series to improve to 23-16 overall and 12-0 in the conference.
With two outs and the score tied at 3-3 in the top of the ninth, Gimmestad pulled one deep to left field to put the Bison up 4-3. Wolfgang stepped up next and put the first pitch she saw over the left-center field fence right by the scoreboard to make it a two-run game.
Lauren Lichtenwalner pitched three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. She came in with no outs and the game-winning run on first base in the bottom of the seventh. The junior made a great play on a sacrifice bunt attempt, throwing out the runner at second. She then got the next batter to hit into a double play to end the threat.
Lichtenwalner allowed just one hit in her three innings, improving to 9-6 with her second win of the series.
Raeanne Geffert started and went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out four. Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, ending Geffert's streak of 34.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
Bucknell tied the game with an RBI double by Marisa Alemany in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Sarah Baluch in the top of the fourth.
Holy Cross tied it at 2-all in the fifth inning, only to see Bucknell go back up one, 3-2, on an RBI single in the fifth.
The Bison were one inning away from wrapping up yet another series sweep, but Taylor Wahler led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and then scored on a single by Sydney Behrens. That's when Lichtenwalner entered and came through with a clutch relief performance.
Bucknell finished with 11 hits, led by Gimmestad's 3-for-5 day that included a double in addition to her single and home run. Lauren Hadley, Halie Mariano, Julienne Egofske, Ryanne Rokos, and Nicole Rivait all singled.
Holy Cross dropped to 5-17 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
Bucknell clinched a spot in the four-team Patriot League Tournament with the win. The Bison sit all alone in first place, while Boston University is in second at 8-1 after sweeping a three-game series with Colgate.
The Bison will host Binghamton for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday before hitting the road to play a three-game Patriot League series at Army West Point on Saturday and Sunday.
