Tanabe shoots 3-under to win by one stroke
FINAL RESULTS
HELLERTOWN, Pa. -- Bucknell sophomore Chris Tanabe finished 3-under par over 36 holes to win the individual championship, and the Bison men's golf team placed third in a field of 20 teams at the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Lafayette at Steel Club. After firing a 3-under 69 in Sunday's opening round, Tanabe followed with an even-par 72 on Monday to claim the title by one shot over Iona's Kritsarin Oukosavanna.
The key stretch for Tanabe started on the 13th hole. After back-to-back bogeys at 11 and 12 left him at 2-over for the day, Tanabe parred the 13th, and then went birdie-eagle at 14 and 15. The eagle at the par-5 15th sent him to 4-under for the tournament. He gave one back with a bogey at 17, but his par at 18 clinched the one-shot win over the fast-charging Oukosavanna, who closed with a 68. Tanabe took first in a field of 116 players.
Tanabe and Connor O'Brien were part of a four-way tie for first place at the Quechee Club Invitational in the fall, but Drew Powell of Brown claimed medalist honors with a birdie on the first playoff hole. So Tanabe becomes the first Bison to win a tournament championship since Dan Bernard won the Bucknell Invitational in September of 2012. He is Bucknell's 34th all-time individual champion.
Bucknell posted 294-296 for a 36-hole team score of 590. Robert Morris claimed the team title with 585, with host Lafayette finishing second at 589, one better than the Bison. Iona (592) and Navy (593) rounded out the top five.
J.P. Raftery also had a strong day for the Bison. He made four birdies on the way to a 1-over 73, and his 3-over 147 put him in a tie for 12th place. Also for Bucknell, Peter Bradbeer closed with a 75, Carter Cook shot 76, and Jason Lohwater posted a 77.
The Bison are back in action Apr. 8-9 at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Villanova at White Manor CC in Malvern, Pa.
