LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball hit three home runs in an 8-3 win over Lehigh on Sunday at Leadership Park, sweeping the three-game series with the Mountain Hawks while improving to 16-15 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the Patriot League.
The Bison, who have won six straight games, are the first team ever to sweep Lehigh in a Patriot League series of at least three games. The Mountain Hawks saw their record dip to 10-18 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Lauren Hadley, Taylor Wolfgang, and Anna Gimmestad all homered for Bucknell. The fireworks started early as Hadley hit a two-run shot and Wolfgang had a solo blast to give the Bison a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Raeanne Geffert put Lehigh down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, giving her eight-straight hitless innings against the Mountain Hawks that included a no-hitter the day before. Lehigh finally got to Bucknell's standout pitcher in the second inning, starting with a solo home run by Jaelynn Chesson, and added two more runs to tie the game at 3-3.
Those were the only runs Geffert would give up. The game remained tied until Bucknell erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth inning, capped by a three-run home run by Gimmestad that completed the scoring. It was her fourth long ball of the season and third in the last four games. She, Hadley (5), and Wolfgang (4) have combined for 13 of the team's 15 homers this season.
Julienne Egofske got things started in the big sixth inning with a one-out single. Tara Baglivo came on to pinch run, advanced to second on a single by Nicole Rivait, and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Allyse Volpe.
There were back-to-back close plays at the plate in that same inning, both thanks to great slides by Bucknell runners. Rivait was thrown out at home on a close play for the second out. That was immediately followed by Volpe scoring from third on a double steal. Pinch-runner Bella DeRiso took off for second, but Lehigh went home with the ball following a very brief rundown. Volpe just got her hand on the plate on a feet-first slide before being tagged to put the Bison up 5-3.
Bucknell had 12 hits in the game, including a single and double by Marisa Alemany. Gimmestad added a double to her home run. Volpe and Hadley also had multiple hits, while Wolfgang, Hom, Egofske, and Rivait finished with one apiece.
Geffert improved to 9-8 on the season and 4-0 against Patriot League opponents. She went all seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out five.
Bucknell sits in first place in the league standings and joins Boston University (3-0) as the two teams still unbeaten in league play.
The Bison will look to keep the streak going when they host Lafayette for a three-game series at Becker Field on Saturday and Sunday. The Leopards are 3-22-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference after losing two of three games against Army West Point this weekend.
