Geffert Pitches No-Hitter in First Game of Softball's Doubleheader Sweep at Lehigh
3/30/2019 6:18:00 PM | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Raeanne Geffert pitched a no-hitter in the first game and Bucknell erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits in the second game as the Bison swept Lehigh in a Patriot League softball doubleheader Saturday at Leadership Park.
Bucknell improved to 15-15 overall and 5-0 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh dropped to 10-17 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The teams tied for second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll this year.
The win ended a long drought for the Bison in road games against Lehigh. It was their first wins over the Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem since 2010, ending a drought of 15 straight road losses in the series. It was also the first time Lehigh has been swept in a home doubleheader by a Patriot League team since 1998.
Geffert's no-hitter was the first of her career and the program's first since Cindy Cherness no-hit North Carolina Central in a five-inning game in 2016.
Bucknell and Lehigh will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at noon. The game will stream live on the Patriot League Network.
Game 1 – Bucknell 2, Lehigh 0
Geffert pitched her first career no-hitter while leading Bucknell to a 2-0 win over Lehigh in the first game of the doubleheader. She walked three batters and struck out four while lowering her season ERA to 2.33.
Geffert retired the first 12 batters in order before issuing a walk to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. She added one more walk that inning and another in the seventh to account for Lehigh's three total baserunners in the game.
The no-hitter was aided by a great defensive effort behind Geffert, including a diving catch in the hole at shortstop on a liner to lead off the seventh inning.
Geffert's no-no came against a solid Lehigh lineup. The Mountain Hawks entered the game as the Patriot League leaders in batting average (.285) and on-base percentage (.347).
Bucknell has won each of Geffert's last four starts, all coming in league play. She picked up the win in three of those games, while Lauren Lichtenwalner added a victory in relief last weekend.
Lauren Hadley drove in both runs for Bucknell. She plated Allyse Volpe with an RBI groundout in the first inning and drove in Nicole Rivait with a two-out double in the fifth.
Jess Hom singled twice for two of Bucknell's six hits. Volpe, Ryanne Rokos, and Rivait all added singles.
Game 2 – Bucknell 14, Lehigh 3 (5 innings)
The Bison lineup totaled 14 runs on 14 hits as they rolled to a 14-3 win in five innings in the second game of the doubleheader. Volpe and Jess Hom each went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Hadley had Bucknell's lone extra-base hit in the game with a double. Taylor Wolfgang led the team in RBIs with four while going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Gimmestad also had two singles, while Marisa Alemany, Ryanne Rokos, and Julienne Egofske added one hit apiece. Egofske drove in three runs.
The 14 runs were Bucknell's most since scoring 14 in a win over Holy Cross last season.
Lichtenwalner had the win in the circle for Bucknell, going all five innings. She gave up one run in the first inning and then held Lehigh hitless through the next three. The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the seventh. Lichtenwalner gave up seven hits and didn't have a walk or a strikeout.
