ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a slow start, falling to Navy, 14-8, in its Patriot League opener at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Midshipmen (3-1, 1-0 Patriot League) raced out to a 6-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter and never allowed the Bison (1-4, 0-1 Patriot League) to draw closer than five goals the rest of the way. Navy was led offensively by Christian Daniel (4g-3a) and Greyson Torain (3g-1a), who was recently named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List.
Freshman Alston Tarry accounted for half of Bucknell's goals, setting a new career high in the process. Tommy Sopko added two strikes while Reed Malas posted three assists. The Bison netted five of the game's final eight goals to bring the final score to 14-8; they trailed by as many as eight, at 11-3 with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter.
Navy held advantages in shots (47-38), shots on goal (27-17) and ground balls (39-31) while Jarett Witzal won 14 faceoffs to help Bucknell finish with a 14-11 advantage in that statistical category. Witzal also scooped up a game-best 11 ground balls, matching his 2019 high that was one shy of his career-high total.
Six different Bison caused a turnover while Will Yorke added four ground balls. Christian Klipstein reached the double digits in saves for the fourth time this season, finishing with 13. Klipstein's 13 stops gave him 468 in his career, good for seventh in the Bucknell annals. He now needs 32 saves become the seventh Bison with 500 in his career.
Entering the game, the Midshipmen had not ceded an extra-man goal in 2019, holding their opponents 0-for-5. Bucknell went 3-for-5 on the man advantage during the contest, with Tarry finding the back of the net twice and Ryan Durkin once.
The Bison continue Patriot League play by hosting Holy Cross on Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. They then travel to North Carolina for a 4 p.m. tilt on Tuesday, March 12.
