Softball Tops Manhattan, Loses One-Run Game to Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – Bucknell softball split a pair of games Friday on the first day of the Saint Mary's Tournament. The Bison started the day with a 5-3 win over Manhattan before falling 2-1 to the host Gaels.
The Bison are 9-13 on the season and will play the same two teams on Saturday. They will take on Manhattan at 12:30 p.m. (EST) and Saint Mary's at 3 p.m.
Bucknell 5, Manhattan 3
The Bison used a four-run second inning and saw Lauren Lichtenwalner work out of trouble multiple times to get the 5-3 win over Manhattan. Lichtenwalner pitched 6.1 innings and gave up 10 hits and four walks, but allowed just the three runs while striking out three batters.
Lichtenwalner finished with 137 pitches and stranded 13 Manhattan runners on base. Seven of those runners were stranded in scoring position.
Taylor Wolfgang sparked Bucknell's big inning with an RBI double. Allyse Volpe had an RBI single, while Nicole Rivait and Jess Hom each had an RBI with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively.
Volpe had two of Bucknell's six hits. Rivait doubled, while Anna Gimmestad and Lauren Hadley added singles.
Raeanne Geffert retired two batters to pick up her first save of the season.
Manhattan dropped to 6-6 on the season.
Saint Mary's 2, Bucknell 1
Raeanne Geffert was great in the circle but it came in a losing effort as the Bison came up just short, 2-1, in the second game.
All three runs in the game came in the fourth inning. Bucknell took a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI double by Taylor Wolfgang.
The Gaels responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but both runs were unearned. The Bison committed two errors in the inning.
Geffert went all six innings and didn't allow an earned run. She gave up five hit and one walk while striking out nine batters.
Wolfgang had two of the team's six hits. Rivait tripled, while Volpe, Gimmestad, and Hadley all singled. Gimmestad has a hit in 14 of the last 15 games.
The Gaels upped their record to 5-14.
