No. 24 Women's Water Polo Goes 2-0 on Day One of Bison Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 24 Bucknell University women's water polo team went 2-0 to start the Bison Invitation on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
Bucknell improves to 5-1 overall on the season with the wins.
Game One: Bucknell 14 – Salem 4
The Bison used a quick start once again in their game against the Tigers, with Emily Konishi scoring shortly after the opening whistle on an assist from Gigi Rojahn. Ally Furano found the back of the cage shortly after, also assisted by Rojahn. After a goal by the Tigers, Bucknell used two straight goals from Konishi and a goal from Furano to end the period 5-1 up.
Salem scored two straight to open the second period and cut the Bucknell lead to 5-3, but another goal from A. Furano, this time assisted by Sarah Mooney, helped stop the Salem spurt. Kali Hyham was also involved in the play after picking up a steal to start the attack. Hyham was involved in Bucknell's seventh goal as well, drawing an ejection to set up A. Furano's penalty shot. Another goal from Konishi helped the Bison take an 8-3 lead heading into the halftime break.
Bucknell continued to press in the third, outscoring the Tigers 5-0 to cruise to a 14-4 victory in their opening fixture of the day.
A. Furano posted another strong performance after garnering CWPA Offensive Player of the Week Honors last week. This time, Furano scored six goals and added three assists to post a nine-point day. Emily Konishi also provided four goals, while Rojahn, Nina Benson, and Marcela Herrera each posted two assists. Hyham drew four ejections on the day. Georgia Lewis made nine saves in the cage for the Bison.

Hyham ignited the game early on after scoring the opening three goals to give the Bison a 3-0 lead in the first period.
The fast start didn't stop there however, as Konishi added a fourth before the Saints could muster a response near the end of the quarter. The Bison kept their foot on the gas, scoring twice more in the second quarter on strikes by Konishi and A. Furano to take a 6-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
Goals from Sarah Mooney and Emily Konishi in the third period helped extend the Bison lead to 8-2 heading into the fourth, and a goal each from Molly Teresi, Rachel Craig, and Paige Furano helped the Bison finish the day 2-0 with an 11-3 win.
Konishi finished with three goals and two assists while adding six steals defensively. She has posted two six-plus steal games already this season. Hyham added three goals, while five other Bison players had at least one goal. Georgia Lewis made three saves for the Orange and Blue.
