Women's Lacrosse Falls at No. 14/11 Virginia Tech in 2019 Opener

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team fell to No. 14/11 Virginia Tech, 14-4, on Saturday at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility in the season opener for both teams.
The Hokies scored the game's first seven goals and never looked back, moving to 5-0 all-time against the Bison. For Virginia Tech, Emma Crooks (4g-1a) and Sarah Lubnow (2g-2a) led the way offensively while a staunch defensive unit only ceded six shots on goal.
Eve Calabria accounted for half of Bucknell's goals, with one coming on a free-position attempt. Audrey Walsh and Kali Peeples were the other Bison goal scorers; Peeples' tally was the first of her collegiate career. Freshman Amy Roche registered the assist on Peeples' goal to pick up her first collegiate point.
In net, Jamisen DeWitt finished with eight saves. Eva Macris paced the Bison in ground balls (4) while Callie DeWitt was the team leader in caused turnovers (3).
The Hokies held advantages in shots (33-9), shots on goal (23-6), ground balls (24-17) and draw controls (13-7). Virginia Tech, a 2018 NCAA Tournament participant, was ranked 11th in the first Inside Lacrosse poll, and 14th in the first IWLCA poll, of the season.
The Hokies were Bucknell's first ACC opponent since the 2012 campaign. That season, the Bison met Duke in their opener, ceding a 25-3 decision. The Blue Devils were ranked fifth nationally at the time and were coming off a berth in the NCAA Final Four.
The Bison next welcome Hofstra to Graham Field for their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 16. The opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
