No. 22 Women's Water Polo Opens Mercyhurst Invite With Two Wins

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 22 Bucknell University women's water polo team defeated host Mercyhurst in the first game of the Mercyhurst Invite on Saturday morning at the Cathedral Prep Event Center thanks to 14 goals combined from Emily Konishi, Ally Furano, and Sarah Mooney. Konishi followed up in the second game against McKendree with a six-goal, four assist performance to lead the Bison to a 17-6 victory in the nightcap.
The Bison improve to 8-2 after the two wins, and to 17-1 all-time against the Lakers.
Game One: No. 22 Bucknell 21, Mercyhurst 12
Konishi started things off in the early goings with a goal, and the Bison kept the foot on the gas from then on, jumping out to a 6-0 lead near the end of the period before the Lakers stopped the Bison run with a goal right at the end of the first. Konishi scored all four of her goals during the spurt, with Eliza Romeyn and A. Furano each adding a tally.
Four more goals from the Bison in the second period helped to give the Bison a 10-3 lead entering the halftime break. This time it was four different scorers for the Bison, with Nina Benson, Larissa Hodzic, A. Furano, and Mooney each finding the back of the cage.
The Bison left little doubt on the outcome of the game in the third after the two teams exchanged goals to open the period. The Bison scored the next four goals to take a commanding 15-4 lead entering the final period and eventually cruise to a 21-12 win.
A. Furano led the way for the Bison, scoring six times for her second six-goal game this season. Mooney and Konishi each added four goals. Rachel Craig and Molly Teresi each notched multiple goal games for the Bison in the win.
Georgia Lewis and Hayley Pogue combined for 12 saves to earn the win in the cage.

The Bison, known for starting fast through their opening nine games, found themselves in an early 2-0 deficit. However, Bucknell turned things around, scoring the next nine goals through the first and the majority of the second period to take a 9-2 lead before McKendree could find another goal of its own.
Bucknell received goals from Konishi, A. Furano, Kali Hyham, and Mooney during the stretch.
After the goal from McKendree, Konishi added one more goal just before the half to give Bucknell a 10-3 advantage heading into the break. Bucknell used a 6-0 run in the third quarter to seal the win, and cruised to a 17-6 win to go 2-0 on the day. Hyham was involved with three of the six goals during the stretch, as well as drawing several ejections during the run.
Konishi posted a season-best ten points on six goals and four assists, as well as adding four steals and two ejections drawn. A. Furano added four goals and four assists, while Hyham posted three goals and three ejections drawn. Georgia Lewis posted nine saves and three assists in the cage.
The Bison will play VMI Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
