LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University soccer team fell 2-0 at No. 21 Navy in Sunday afternoon Patriot League action. The Mids broke open a scoreless game with two goals in under a minute in the final 15 minutes as Navy improved to 11-0 this season and extended its 15-game winning streak dating back to 2018.
Bucknell falls to 2-5-3 after the defeat (0-2-2 PL).
The Bison started the game brightly, accumulating several corners early on and looking sharp in possession. Bernie Wright tested Mids goalkeeper Ian Bramblett with a shot just two minutes into the game, but the Navy shot stopper kept Wright from his first goal in the 2019 season. The Bison also managed two corner kicks in the opening ten minutes in a positive start for the Orange and Blue that also featured a shot on goal from Dany Teran.
Bucknell nearly took the lead over Navy, which has not trailed this entire season, in the 33rd minute. Senior center back Quinn Bredin started the play when he launched a long ball on a free kick that Bramblett came out to collect. The ball was knocked away by the Navy goalkeeper, but fell at the top of the box to Patrick O'Hara, who clipped a volley that bounced off the crossbar and back into the danger area. Junior Cody Wax then followed up with a shot of his own, but his low strike was cleared off of the line by a Navy defender.
Navy nearly grabbed the lead with ten seconds left in the first half as Emando Manrique's header just went wide of the goal to close an entertaining first half in which the two teams combined for five shots on target.
Navy started the second half brightly, forcing an incredible save from Luke Smith just three minutes into the half as Andrew Hopkins drove a low header from about eight yards out. Smith got his left hand on the ball and managed to deflect the ball over the crossbar and out of danger. Smith followed that up with another great save just 30 seconds later, when he denied Matt Nocita's header after making a leaping save to tip the bar over the crossbar.
Bucknell managed its first shot of the half at the 59:33 mark when Matt Thorsheim had his effort blocked by the Navy defense. Jameson Railey came closest to opening the scoring just two minutes after he came on in the second half, but the freshman was denied his first career goal by Bramblett in the 66th minute.
Navy broke the game open in the 74th minute when Joe Alex curled in a left footed shot that found the upper corner. The Mids struck again just 45 seconds later when Nick West made a run in behind the Bucknell backline before finishing at the far post.
Thorsheim had the best chance for the Bison in the final minutes to pull one back, but his low shot from the top of the box was held by Bramblett as Bucknell fell 2-0 to the 21st-ranked Mids.
Smith finished with five saves for Bucknell, which ties his career-best. Navy held a 14-11 edge in shots, with a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bison will have a week before traveling to Holy Cross on Sunday, Oct. 13 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
