O'Hara's Golden Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to Double Overtime Win at Holy Cross

The two teams have now went to double overtime in back-to-back fixtures. Bucknell improves to 3-5-3 overall, and 1-2-2 in Patriot League matches.
Bucknell opened the game brightly offensively, forcing several good saves from Holy Cross goalkeeper Bobby Hurstak. Matt Thorsheim started things off with a good chance, as his low shot to the left side was corralled by the Holy Cross netminder 14 minutes in. Trevor Wiggins then forced another good save to the upper left side of the goal at the 25 minute mark that Hurstak once again palmed away.
After another shot on target by Thorsheim at the 30-minute mark, it was Jameson Railey who finally broke the nearly 230-minute scoreless streak for the Bison.
Railey picked up the ball from Patrick Mahoney near midfield, and drove at the Holy Cross defense from the left side. Railey continued on into the box, managing a low shot from near the left corner of the penalty area that snuck into the lower far corner. The goal was the first career tally for Railey, and gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The freshman from Rochester, N.Y. nearly scored from a similar spot with 35 seconds left in the half, but his low shot just skipped wide of the far post. Bucknell limited the Crusaders without a shot on target in a solid first half for the Orange and Blue.

Holy Cross started the second half positively, and converted its first shot on goal in the 56th minute after a long throw in by Jacob Wright was knocked down in the box by Rory Birse. Max Krause was first to the ball in the box, and volleyed home the equalizing goal into the upper right corner. Bucknell managed just one shot in the first thirty minutes of the half, before senior captain Nick King forced a low save from Hurstak at the 75:06 mark.
Two defensive plays highlighted the final minutes of the second half as each team went for the three points. A cross from the Crusaders was initially knocked down by Luke Smith at the 87:17 mark, but fell kindly to Jack Ostrosky of Holy Cross. Ostrosky struck what looked like a sure goal from about three yards out before a great sliding block from center back Trevor Wiggins denied the Crusader attacker.

Bucknell had a great chance from Railey 40 seconds later at the 87:57 mark on the other end, when he was found in the center of the box on a nice pass from Thorsheim. The freshman looked to curl one in the far corner, this time on his right foot, but a great play from a Holy Cross defender helped block the threatening opportunity and sent Bucknell to its fourth overtime game this season.
Wiggins had the best chance for the Bison in the first overtime, as he rose highest on a corner kick to drive a headed chance at the right side of the goal in the ninth minute of the first overtime. A Holy Cross defender situated on the post alertly managed to clear the goal-bound ball away, however.
Bucknell seemed destined for its fourth 1-1 draw of 2019, until a quick throw in by the Bison found King with a lot of space in the center of the park just over a minute into the second overtime. King played an excellent swerving pass with his left foot that found junior Cody Wax in stride on the right flank. Wax just kept the ball in play on the right end line, before cutting a well-weighted cross back to the head of an onrushing O'Hara, who timed his leap perfectly as he nodded in the winning goal at the far post.
Here's the build up to the winning goal. Great pass from Nick King to spring Wax, who plays an excellent cross to find an onrushing O'Hara! #rayBucknell @PatriotLeagueTV pic.twitter.com/MWnNRXOrsP

Bucknell's winning goal against Holy Cross in 2018, also in double overtime, also came on a cross from the right side, when Alex Clarke assisted Matt Thorsheim in the 118th minute.
Bucknell has not lost a game in overtime this season in four contests, and outshot the Crusaders 12-6 overall. Bucknell also held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal, and accumulated seven corners to the Crusaders' one.
"It was an unseasonably warm day," said Head Coach Brendan Nash. "The guys really gutted it out in the warm conditions and through two overtimes. We knew we had to go for the win, and it was a great team goal that we scored to finish the game. Now we'll look ahead to Northeastern on Tuesday."
The Bison will face Northeastern on the road on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before a home match against Boston University on Oct. 20.
