Bison Take First Ever Matchup Between the Two Teams
BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Bucknell University men's soccer team came from behind to win for the first time this season, beating Northeastern 2-1 in nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Bison improved to 4-5-3 overall, and will now have until Sunday to prepare for a big conference matchup against Boston University.
Bucknell withstood some early pressure from the Huskies in the opening stages, as Northeastern notched 10 total shots to Bucknell's four in the opening stanza. The Huskies took the lead in the 16th minute on their first shot on target of the day, after Dan Munch slotted home a shot at the back post.
Jameson Railey, after scoring his first collegiate goal on Sunday against Holy Cross, was the first Bison to test Northeastern goalkeeper Chandler Cree at the 31:35 mark, but the goalkeeper was up to the task in forcing Railey's shot away from goal.
Mo Tall had a great chance to equalize in the 41st minute when he found some space in the box on a pass to the left side, but his shot dragged just wide of the left post as Northeastern went into the break with 1-0 lead. The Huskies managed 10 shots overall in the half, but just the one shot on target by Munch was enough to separate the two teams at halftime.
Freshman Chris Masur, who made his first career start for the Bison, gave Bucknell a spark to start the second half after he found space near the center of the field about 25 yards out from goal. Masur took one look up and unleashed a powerful shot from about 25 yards out that whizzed over Cree and into the upper left side of the net. Masur became the third freshman this season to score for the Bison along with Eddie Perez-Pelaez and Railey. Another freshman, Zach Hurchalla, assisted on the play, his second assist of the season. Between Hurchalla and Bernie Wright, Bucknell has had five assists come from players who primarily play on the back line.
Senior captain Nick King looked to give Bucknell a 2-1 lead after he found some space in between two defenders in the second half before poking a low shot past Cree. His shot however, didn't have enough pace as it was cleared just a few yards out from the open net in the 62nd minute.
Bucknell took a 2-1 lead with just over four minutes to go when Matt Thorsheim set up for a corner kick after Eamon O'Connor made a good run forward between two defenders. The Huskies managed to knock the ball away at the top of the box to earn the Bison the set piece. Thorsheim stepped up and delivered a picture-perfect corner to the back post that went in untouched as he netted his fifth of the year, just past the outstretched hands of Cree.
Four of Thorsheim's five goals have come from set pieces, three from the penalty spot and the goal from the corner kick.
The Huskies pushed back in the final few minutes. Just seconds after Thorsheim's goal, Emmett Witmer was forced to make a strong save to deny Munch his second goal of the game near the right side of the 18. Witmer came off his line quickly to knock the ball out for a corner and help Bucknell maintain the lead.
Bucknell kept things packed in the box as the Huskies had several decent looks in the final few seconds of the game. Several important blocks by Bison defenders kept the Huskies off the scoresheet and helped Bucknell take its second consecutive 2-1 victory after winning in double overtime against Holy Cross on Sunday. Bucknell has now scored four times in its past two games after a nearly 230-minute scoreless streak. The come-from-behind win was Bucknell's first win this season after allowing the opening goal.
"It was a great fall break trip," said head coach Brendan Nash. "We said on the way up to Holy Cross that we wanted to use this weekend to get our season headed in the right direction. We had a short turnaround after playing on Sunday, and had some heavy legs, but today was a total team effort and a great way to end our fall break trip."
Northeastern outshot Bucknell 18-11, but the Bison held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Witmer made three saves in goal for Bucknell in the win.
Bucknell will now have until Sunday, Oct. 20 when it returns home for the final three games at Emmitt Field during the regular season. The Bison will play the Terriers in an important matchup for Patriot League positioning, before a Tuesday match against Binghamton. The team will then host Army on Saturday, Oct. 26 for Senior Day.
