FINAL RESULTS
BOSTON, Mass. – Abby Merriman swept the distance freestyle events, accounting for two of Bucknell's eight victories on the day, as the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team topped Boston University 166-34 on Saturday afternoon in the Terriers' Competition Pool. The Bison picked up two dual wins in less than 24 hours after beating Holy Cross on Friday night.
After the Bison opened the meet with a narrow win in the 200-yard medley relay, Merriman dominated the 1,000 free in the first individual event of the day. She swam 10:30.82, good for an eight-second win over Boston University's Joanna McNulty. Merriman came back later and won the 500 free in one of the most dramatic races of the day. She out-touched the Terriers' Sydney Lee by six one-hundredths of a second.
The Bison posted 1-2 finishes in three events: the 100 backstroke and both butterfly races.
In the 100 back, Meghan Taner picked up the win in a time of 58.24, with Emma Hadley just behind in 58.64. Taner and Hadley were the only two swimmers in the race to finish in under one minute.
Two young Bison dominated the butterflies. In the 200 fly, sophomore Alexis Faria won in 2:05.46, one second in front of freshman Sabrina Vumbacco. The positions were reversed in the 100 fly, with Vumbacco winning in 57.29 and Faria second in 57.32.
Also winning for the Bison were Maddie Hartigan in the 100 free (52.63) and Hadley in the 200 back (2:06.58). Hadley also led off the winning 200 medley relay, with Catherine Craig, Faria and Alexandra Ritorto following for a time of 1:46.83.
Bucknell's depth was a big factor, as the Bison posted 2-3 finishes in five of the events that Boston University won. Freshman Sophia Donati had a big points day with a second-place finish and two thirds. Craig was runner-up in both breaststroke events, and Vumbacco added a third-place finish in the 200 IM, giving her a first, a second and a third on the day.
The Bison compete at home for the first time next Saturday against Binghamton at 1 p.m.
