Maggie Wyngowski Led the Way with Two Individual Wins
FINAL RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell won seven events, including two individual wins by Maggie Wyngowski, as it opened the 2018-19 women's swimming and diving season with a non-scored meet against UMBC on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
Wyngowski, the best rookie in the Patriot League last season, had a great start to her sophomore year with wins in the 400 IM and 100 IM. She was dominant in the longer of the two races, finishing more than three seconds faster than the runner-up. The shorter race went down to the wire, with Wyngowski beating UMBC's Laura Massicotte by just over two-tenths of a second.
Along with Wyngowski, Julie Byrne is one of five All-Patriot League swimmers on the Bison roster this season. The senior opened her final collegiate season with a win in the 200 back, touching the wall in 2:04.45. Junior Emma Hadley, another All-Patriot League honoree, was second in the event.
Steph Boyd is also in her final season at Bucknell and got it started with a first-place finish in the 200 free. The event was one of the Bison's best on the day as Boyd led four Bison swimmers in the top four spots with a time of 1:59.02. She was followed by Maura McManus, Emily Gorham, and Amanda Lauer.
The final Bucknell win in the swimming events came from a freshman. Caroline Mayk was the fastest in the 50 back in her first collegiate meet, finishing first with a time of 28.70.
Bucknell easily won both diving events, taking the top three spots on both boards. Freshman Jessica Hurlburt showed a glimpse of what's to come in her career, winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 231.15. That's just over five points away from cracking the program's top-10 list. She was followed in the event by teammates Alaina Schumann and Paige Schoelkopf.
Schumann, a sophomore, took first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 206.10. She was followed by Hurlburt and Schoelkopf in second and third, respectively.
Adding runner-up finishes for the Bison were Wyngowski (100 breast), Maddie Hartigan (500 free, 50 fly), Lexi Faria (200 fly), Mary Weinstein (200 breast, 100 back), Meagan Hathaway (200 IM), and the 200 medley relay team (Hadley, Wyngowski, Lindsay Smalec, Gorham).
Saturday marked the 12th straight season that Bucknell opened with a non-scored meet against UMBC. The Retrievers won three of the past four league titles in the America East.
Up next for the Bison is a home tri-meet against Boston University and Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 13. They will have 10 meets at Kinney Natatorium this season, including the Patriot League Championships in February.
