LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's swimming & diving team topped Patriot League rival Boston University, 151-148, and A-10 dynasty Richmond, 176-123, in a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison (2-0, 1-0 Patriot League) used 18 top-three finishes to down the Terriers (0-3, 0-2 Patriot League) and Spiders (0-1, 0-0 A-10). Maddie Hartigan and Maggie Wyngowski combined for six of them, including four individual titles.
Hartigan touched the wall first in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle; the freshman's time of 1:52.33 in the 200 freestyle was good for 10th in Bucknell's history. Hartigan also took third in the 100 freestyle and led off the third-place 400 freestyle relay.
Wyngowski won the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM; she added a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and swam on the second-place 200 medley relay.
Julie Byrne (200 backstroke), Emma Hadley (100 backstroke) and Abigail Rosenberg (50 freestyle) also raced to individual titles. With Hadley, Byrne and Steph Boyd, the Bison swept the top three spots in the 100 backstroke. In addition, Alexis Faria contributed a pair of runner-up finishes in the butterfly events.
Bucknell's tight victory over Boston University came down to the final two events: the 200 IM and the 400 freestyle relay. The Bison placed four swimmers in the 200 IM's top seven, setting them up to seal their win by finishing second to the Terriers in the 400 freestyle relay.
Bucknell's win over Richmond, which has won 15 of the past 17 A-10 titles, was its first in program history. The Spiders topped the Bison, 179-119, in their first meeting during the 2016 campaign at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison next host Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. After that event, which occurs during Bucknell's Homecoming weekend, the team will host a reception for parents, alumni and friends of the program in the McGee Room.
