Men's Golf Falls to FDU in First Round at Checkmate Challenge

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- The Bucknell men's golf team dropped a tight 3-2 decision to host Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the Checkmate Match Play Challenge on Saturday at Seaview Golf Club. The Bison are taking on St. Francis (N.Y.) in the consolation bracket, and that match was suspended due to darkness and will resume on Sunday morning.
Chris Tanabe and Jubal Early were Bucknell winners out of the 3 and 4 spots in the lineup against FDU. Tanabe beat Gary Cohan 4&3, while Early defeated Patrick Brennan on the 19th hole. The Knights pulled out two close wins at the top of the lineup. Florian Schroedl edged J.P. Raftery 1-up, and Chris McCormack topped Connor O'Brien by the same margin. In the No. 5 spot, Thomas Scuderi defeated Jack Gregor 2-up.
Bucknell is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while Fairleigh Dickison is No. 5. The Knights are now up against top-seeded Saint Peter's, which beat St. Francis 3.5-1.5 in the first round. Elsewhere, Colgate defeated Central Connecticut 3-2, and Hartford downed Iona 4-1.
Second-round matches will resume on Sunday morning, followed by the contests for first, third and fifth places.
