Men's Golf Goes 1-1 on Final Day of Checkmate Challenge

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- The Bucknell men's golf team finished off a one-sided win over St. Francis Brooklyn but fell to Central Connecticut State on the final day of the Checkmate Match Play Challenge, hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson at Seaview Golf Club. The Bison finished the tournament in sixth place with a 1-2 record.
Bucknell dropped a close 3-2 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round on Friday, then posted convincing victories in the top four spots in the lineup in a 4.5-0.5 win over St. Francis.
No. 4 man Jubal Early and No. 3 Chris Tanabe were both finished after 14 holes. Early beat Hayden Meeker 6&4, while Tanabe bettered Frank Parisi 5&4. Soon after, J.P. Raftery beat Alexander Lising-White 4&3 at No. 1, and Connor O'Brien won by the same margin against Nick Nemergut at No. 2.
In the No. 5 spot, Jack Gregor halved his match with Colin Devin.
In the match for fifth place on Saturday afternoon, Central Connecticut posted 4&3 wins at No. 1 and 2 and a 6&4 win at No. 5 en route to a 4-1 verdict. Tanabe and Early picked up a half-point each.
Hartford won the title with a 4.5-0.5 win over Saint Peter's in the championship match. Colgate beat FDU 3-2 to claim third place.
Bucknell returns to more traditional stroke-play competition on Apr. 9-10 at Villanova's Wildcat Invitational.
