Bucknell Won Seven Events at the Season-Opening Meet
RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Kaitlin Salisbury set a school record in the long jump, and Bucknell won seven events as the Bison women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Bison Opener on Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
Joining Bucknell at the team's first indoor meet of the season were Bloomsburg, Lafayette, Lock Haven, Misericordia, Penn State, Saint Francis, and Shippensburg.
Salisbury smashed a 20-year old school record and finished third at the meet with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 19-3 ½, finishing behind a pair of jumpers from Penn State. That was easily better than her previous best of 18-10 ¾ and was a full two inches better than the previous record of 19-1 ½ set by Jen Rice in 1998.
Salisbury also finished first in the prelims of the 60-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 7.63, just missing tying her school record of 7.62 in the event. The junior did not run in the finals as she was busy setting the school record in the long jump.
ÂÂÂDelia Sipe also posted a program top-10 mark for the Bison while finishing second in the shot put. Her toss of 45-4 ¼ was more than a foot better than her previous best and was good enough for eighth on Bucknell's all-time list. Penn State's Payden Montana won the event.
Natalie Waterhouse had one individual win and added one in a relay. Her individual title came in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:18.97. She then added a first-place finish while teaming with Michaela Bracken, Gianna Mincone, and Rebecca Rooney in the 4x400 relay.
Alexandra Butz was the first-place finisher in the high jump. She cleared 5-5 to match her personal-best mark, which ranks seventh all-time at Bucknell. Three of her teammates – Sydney Contrino, Bracken, and Lexy Forrestal – all tied for second in the event.
Colleen Buckley, fresh off winning the Patriot League title during the cross country season, made her indoor season debut and easily won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:51.45. She was followed by Payton Capes, Emma Dolen, and Lauren Gronbeck in the eight-runner field.
Bucknell took the top two spots in the 800-meter run. Karly Forker was the champion in the event, crossing the line in 2:18.73, while Mincone was the runner-up.
Rounding out Bucknell's individual winners were Rebecca Rooney in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.62 and Lauren Hazzard in the mile with a time of 5:09.96.
"We won seven events which was very solid considering Penn State brought some very good athletes," Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner said. "Some areas looked very good and others need some work, but I do believe we are in a position to contend for a league title. Getting ECAC standards from Salisbury, Buckley, and Sipe, plus a school record from Salisbury is a very good start."
Adding runner-up finishes for the Bison were Shaylyn Fahey (300m), Ashley Blair (5,000m), and Molly Montalvo (weight throw).
The Bison will next compete at Penn State's Nittany Lion invitational on Saturday, Jan. 12.
