Abby Kapp Hit Five 3-Pointers and Scored a Career-High 19 Points
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bucknell tied a program record with 14 3-pointers and tallied 24 assists on its 31 field goals in a 77-58 win over UMass in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at Brown University's Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bison improved to 3-2 on the season with a win in their first of three games at the Turkey Tip-Off.
"It was really fun to watch this team play tonight," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We moved the ball well and got open shots. To see 24 assists and only 11 turnovers is a good sign for us."
Abby Kapp hit five 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 19 points. She passed her previous career high of 15 early in the game, scoring her 16th point with 7:11 to play in the opening half. The sophomore connected on four of her first five attempts from beyond the arc.
Kapp was one of many outstanding performances for Bucknell. Senior Kaitlyn Slagus had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while adding four assists and three blocks. Senior Kyi English did it all, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, in addition to seven assists and three steals. English had the impressive assist total while committing zero turnovers.
"We had multiple players hit big shots for us, which was great to see," Roussell said.
Sophomore Ally Johnson contributed to the 3-point barrage, hitting three of her five attempts on her way to nine points. Junior Ellie Mack had a solid all-around game with eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal. The Bison finished with eight blocks and nine steals, just missing double-digit steals. They have posted double-digit steals three times through five games this season after doing so just three times all of last season.
The Bison started fast, hitting their first four shots, including three from beyond the arc, to take an 11-2 lead just 2:25 after the opening tip. Kapp hit two of the 3-pointers, while English made one and Slagus scored a bucket in the paint.
They went on to make nine of their first 10 shots, including four of their first five 3-pointers while jumping out to a 22-11 lead. That margin went to 17 (28-11) after the first quarter. In those opening 10 minutes, they shot 73 percent (11-15) from the field and 75 percent (6-8) on 3-pointers. Seven players scored while the team tallied eight assists on 11 field goals.
Bucknell took a 46-33 lead into the half and the offensive numbers remained impressive. The Bison were 60 percent (18-30) from the field and 60 percent (9-15) from beyond the arc at the break. English made all three of her 3-point attempts in the half.
"A lot of things clicked tonight for us. When we were good, we were really good," Roussell said. "That was a tough team that really put pressure on our defense. It was a really impressive win."
UMass, which fell to 3-2 on the season, was led by Bre Hampton-Bey with 13 points. The Bison held Hailey Leidel to four points on 2-of-9 shooting. The Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection entered the game averaging 16.5 points and was coming off a 28-point performance against UT Rio Grand Valley.
The Bison shot 50 percent (31-62) from the floor, led by an 8-for-11 night by Slagus. English was 5-of-8 from the field.
Bucknell continues play at the Turkey Tip-Off with a game against Fairfield on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Stags lost to Brown 68-49 in the first game of the tournament.
