LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's swimming & diving team finished third at the Bucknell Invitational, which concluded on Sunday at Kinney Natatorium.
Victories by Julie Byrne (200 backstroke) and Maddie Hartigan (1,650 freestyle) brought the Bison's total number of individual titles to four. Hartigan won the 500 freestyle on Friday while Abigail Rosenberg (200 freestyle) and Maggie Wyngowski (400 IM) touched the wall first on Saturday.
The Bison ultimately totaled 1,151 points, placing them behind defending champion Towson (1,564) and Fordham (1,264). They were the only three teams that exceeded 1,000 points at the three-day meet.
Hartigan continued her breakout Bucknell Invitational, winning the 1,650 freestyle with the third-fastest time (16:50.52) in school history. She clocked the first 1,000 in 10:14.51, moving her up to fifth in the Bison annals from ninth (10:23.19).
Earlier, Hartigan posted top-10 times in the 500 freestyle (2nd, 4:50.28) and 200 freestyle (3rd, 1:49.41). In total, she reached the 'A' finals in three events and was a member of two top-five relay teams.
Byrne, who took third in the 100 backstroke on Saturday, claimed the 200 backstroke title on Sunday. Her time of 1:58.58 was a new personal record; she remained slotted fourth in Bucknell's history.
Rosenberg added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle to her resume, clocking a time of 50.66 that would have been good for second in school history if she wasn't already the record holder (50.42).
Emma Hadley, who finished second in the 100 backstroke on Saturday, took the same spot in the 200 backstroke on Sunday.
Abby Merriman (6th, 1,650 freestyle) and Lindsay Smalec (8th, 200 butterfly) were the only other Bison who reached the 'A' finals on the Bucknell Invitational's final day. In addition, the 400 freestyle relay team of Rosenberg, Smalec, Megan Barpoulis and Steph Boyd took fourth.
Two freshmen who swam in the 200 butterfly's 'B' finals clocked program top-10 times: Alexis Faria (5th, 2:04.40) and Meagan Hathaway (10th, 2:05.52).
A handful of Bucknell swimmers will compete at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. from Thursday, Nov. 29 to Saturday, Dec. 1. The full team will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 20 at the FAU Invite in Boca Raton, Fla.
