The Bison Honored Seven Seniors Prior to the Game
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell closed the regular season and celebrated Senior Day with a 3-2 win over visiting Appalachian State in a non-conference field hockey game Sunday at Graham Field. It was the first ever meeting between the teams.
The Bison improved to 10-7 overall and now turn their attention to a semifinal matchup with American in the Patriot League Tournament. That game will be played at Boston University on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
The final score wasn't quite indicative of the action on the field, which Bucknell controlled for most of the game. The Bison led 3-0 before giving up two goals in the final two minutes of the game.
The first half was all Bucknell as it took a 1-0 lead thanks to Megan Keeney's fourth goal of the season. She deflected in a shot by Sally Olson in the 17th minute. That was the lone goal for the Bison, but they out-shot the Mountaineers 11-0 in the half and had a 6-0 difference in penalty corners.
Olson, one of seven players honored for Senior Day prior to the game, would later add a goal to her assist, putting Bucknell up 2-0 with her third score of the season.
Brittany Willwerth and Marisa Morakis registered assists on the penalty corner goal, which came with 14:17 to play. Willwerth's assist was her fourth of the weekend, adding to the three she tallied in a 4-1 win over Lafayette on Saturday.
Kaelyn Long made it a three-goal game less than three minutes later. Senior Nicole Rupnik redirected a shot by Olson, but it went off the post. Long snagged the rebound and beat the goalie for her third goal of the year.
Olivia Harris made five saves to pick up her 10th win of the season. That ties her for the sixth most wins in a season in program history.
Appalachian State's goals were scored by Veere Van Heertum and Jillian Ulery. The Mountaineers dropped to 5-13 on the season.
Joining Olson as seniors playing their final home game for the Bison were M.C. Evans, Mackenzie Haney, Claire Lesher, Katie Mannino, Lexi Quick, and Rupnik.
