Bison will host a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game on Oct. 30
BOSTON, Mass. – Boston University tallied goals late in the first half and early in the second to turn back Bucknell 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Now 7-9-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the Patriot League, the Bison are now assured of being seeded either third or fourth in the Patriot League Tournament, which means they will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Chloee Sagmoe opened the scoring for the Terriers (8-7-3, 6-0-2 PL) with 4:35 remaining in the first half, tapping in a shot from close range after Shannon Keefe kept the play alive on a back-post cross in from Anna Heilferty. Royce Light provided the insurance marker 9:11 into the second period. Light had the finishing touch after receiving Pietra Sweeney's service on a free kick.
The Terriers outshot the Bison 12-5, with all five of Bucknell's attempts coming in the second half. Backs Riley Coopersmith and Maddie Dano registered two shots apiece for the Bison. Coopersmith and Dano both had long strikes in the 65th minute that required similar tricky saves from Morgan Messner, who tipped the high shots over the bar.
Theresa Adu-Attobrah finished with six saves for the Bison, while her counterpart Messner stopped three shots.
Bucknell saw its four-game series winning streak come to an end. Two of those wins came in the postseason, with the Bison winning in the 2016 Patriot League championship game and the 2017 semifinals.
Bucknell came into the contest with a top-four seed already assured and had a chance to jump into a tie for second place with a win in Boston. Instead, the Terriers are back in second place with 20 points, two behind Colgate with one game remaining in the regular season. Navy is third with 18 points, followed by Bucknell with 15.
The Bison and Midshipmen will meet next Friday in Lewisburg, and the Bucknell can swipe the No. 3 seed if it can take all three points in that contest. The third and fourth seeds will both host quarterfinal games.
Bucknell and Navy will meet on Friday at 5 p.m. at Emmitt Field, with coverage on the Patriot League Network at PatriotLeague.tv.
