Sarah Dimock, Sally Olson, and M.C. Evans All Scored for the Bison
WORCESTER, Mass. – Bucknell clinched a spot in the Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament for the 11th straight year with a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday at Hart Turf Field. The Bison received scores from three players that each tallied their first goal of the season.
Sarah Dimock, Sally Olson, and M.C. Evans all scored goals as Bucknell improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. With just one league game left on the schedule – a home matchup with Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 27 – the Bison can finish as high as the second seed and as low as the fourth seed in the four-team tournament. Boston University has clinched the top seed and hosting rights.
Bucknell fell behind early to Holy Cross as the Crusaders went up 1-0 on a goal by Suzanne Noone in the 18th minute. That lead held until late in the first half when Sarah Dimock put the Bison on the board with her first goal of the season. The score was unassisted as Dimock brought the ball into the arc and beat the goalie high to tie the game.
A defensive player tallied the game-winning goal for the Bison. Olson, who leads the team with three defensive saves, contributed on the offensive end this time with her goal in the 45th minute. Brittany Willwerth and Marisa Morakis registered assists on the successful penalty corner.
Evans was the hero in last year's 2-1 win over Holy Cross that also clinched a postseason berth for Bucknell, scoring the game-winner with 1:21 left in regulation. She tacked on an insurance goal this year to help the Bison clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Crusaders again. Chloe Poltonavage tallied an assist as Evans redirected her shot past the goalie with 7:45 to play.
Despite the close score, Bucknell controlled the action with a 19-9 lead in shots, 13-3 advantage in shots on goal, and 7-2 difference in penalty corners. Junior goalie Oliva Harris stopped two shots to get the win.
Before the Bison turn their attention to the final league game, they have to focus on a tough opponent Tuesday. They will travel to Penn State to take on the sixth-ranked Nittany Lions at 6 p.m.
