EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Behind hat tricks from Emily Becker and Gretchen Richter, the Bucknell women's lacrosse team built a 9-2 halftime lead and then coasted to an 11-5 victory over Mount St. Mary's at Waldron Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Bison are now 2-0 on the season, outscoring their first two opponents 36-6.
Richter added two assists to give her a five-point game, and Becker added an assist to give her four points on the day. Christina Manis added two goals and an assist, and Eve Lukowski also scored a pair of goals to lead an offense that has been clicking early in the season.
This one was decided in the first half, as Bucknell jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Manis, Richter and Becker, and it never looked back. It was a 5-2 game before the Bison scored four goals in the final 4:14 of the half. Richter had two of those. Her tally with 51 seconds left made it an 8-2 game, and then on a fastbreak right off the draw, Becker scored off a Callie DeWitt feed just 11 seconds later for a seven-goal halftime cushion.
Becker opened the halftime scoring to make it 10-2, and even though Bucknell scored just once more, they pieced together a number of long offensive possessions to salt away the clock.
Bucknell outshot the Mountaineers 19-5 in the first half and 27-17 overall. The Bison also led 17-12 in ground balls and 10-8 in draw controls. Sam Rickels led the way with six draw controls, and Annie Gilbertson paced another terrific Bucknell defensive performance with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jamie DeWitt made six of her eight saves in the second half for the Bison, while Mount St. Mary's goalie Steph Rurkowski finished with 12 stops.
Bucknell is 2-0 for the first time since 2009. The Bison will look to keep the hot start going next Saturday against Villanova at Graham Field at 1 p.m.
