JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's golf team finished up the Red Flash Invitational with its best outing of the spring on Tuesday, firing a 290 team total in a narrow second-place finish at Sunnehanna Country Club. Three Bison players placed in the top 10 individually, led by sophomore John Edler, who carded a 1-over-par 71 in the final round en route to a fourth-place finish.
After posting rounds of 293 and 294 on Monday, the Bison began Tuesday morning's final round 13 strokes behind Robert Morris. They shaved nine shots off that deficit as the Colonials finished up with a 299, but Robert Morris held off Bucknell 873-877 over 54 holes. Humber College, paced by medalist Barret McCarthy, was well back in third place at 892, while host Saint Francis (Pa.) and Wagner tied for fourth at 893.
Bucknell's 290 was the lowest final-round score in the field by nine shots, and it consisted of Edler's 71 along with a trio of 73s from Daniel Levin, D.J. Magee and C.J. Zachary. For Levin, it was his third straight round of 73 in this event and his fifth straight 73 dating back to last week's Lafayette Invitational.
Levin finished in a tie for 7th place at 219, followed closely behind by Magee in a tie for ninth at 220. Zachary totaled 224 for the week and finished T17th. Peter Scialabba also had a solid final round with a 77, but it was not counted in the team total.
Edler's fourth-place finish was the best of his young career. The 71 was also a personal best, although it did come on a par-70 course. Edler has posted an even-par 72 on three previous occasions.
Bucknell's B team also fared well on Tuesday, with Zachary Melnick (75), Austin Honigford (78), J.B. Thompson (78) and Nick Geissler (80) combining for a 311 tally.
McCarthy won the individual title with a 212 total, two shots better than Santiago Mejia of Robert Morris. Erik Tedfelt of Wagner was third at 215, followed by Edler alone in fourth place at 217.
Bucknell has now shot 294 or better in each of its last four competitive rounds. The recent run of strong play comes at a good time, as the Bison are now off until the Patriot League Championship at Colgate's Seven Oaks GC on Apr. 25-26.
