JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- As the weather has warmed up, so has the Bucknell men's golf team. The Bison on Monday opened play at the Red Flash Invitational with scores of 293 and 294 -- they now have three straight rounds of 294 or better -- and sit in second place in a field of nine teams with 18 more holes still to play.
Scoring was low throughout the field at Sunnehanna Country Club, and Bucknell joined the party, counting four scores of 74 or better in each of the first two rounds. John Edler (72-74) and Daniel Levin (73-73) are both at 6-over-par 146 and are tied for 11th place.
D.J. Magee (74-73) is also in the top-20 (T-13th) at 147. C.J. Zachary (74-77) recorded Bucknell's fourth counting score in the first round, and Peter Scialabba (80-74) turned in a counter in the afternoon.
Bucknell also entered a four-man B team, and that squad turned in rounds of 331 and 311. All four B squad players improved their scores in the second round: Zachary Melnick (81-77), J.B. Thompson (83-77), Nick Geissler (82-79) and Austin Honigford (85-78).
Robert Morris holds the team lead with a 36-hole total of 574. The Bison are second at 587, with host Saint Francis (Pa.) just one shot back at 588. Barret McCarthy of Humber College is 1-under for the tournament and has a three-shot lead on Edward Maruca of Saint Francis and Garrett Browning of Robert Morris.
The third and final round gets underway with a shotgun start Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
