LEWISBURG, Pa. – The campus of Bucknell received some of the best weather of the year to date just in time for track and field's premier home event of the season on Sunday. The Bison wrapped up competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic, which featured athletes from more than 70 teams at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The Bison women had four individuals and two relays place in the top five. Freshman Efe Agege was the top individual placer, taking third out of 33 in the triple jump. She has the best jump (39-6) among the freshmen who were entered.
Two Bucknell relays took third place. The 4x400 team of sophomore Reagan Cerney, sophomore Laura Papili, freshman Jamie Kenney and sophomore Sarah Chandler took third among 18 teams in the 4x400 relay. Freshman Emma Cousins, sophomore Grace Loh, senior Morgan Roche and sophomore Kathleen Fitzgerald each ran a leg on the 4x800 relay team that took third out of 11 teams.
Junior Jen Silvestri, who has already qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 400-meter hurdles, improved upon her time with a season-best 1:01.23 to take fifth among 41 runners. Senior Kim Nagotko, who owns the school record in the 100-meter dash, took fifth out of 53 runners on Sunday with a time of 12.29.
Junior Abigail Brundage represented the Bison throwers with a solid showing in the shot put. Her heave of 43-5 ¾ was good enough for fourth in a field of 38 competitors.
Sophomore Joseph Breen highlighted the results for Bucknell's men's team, smashing the school record in the shot put while taking fifth among 40 throwers. His toss of 55-5 ½ was more than a foot better than the previous record of 54-2 ½ set by Tom Barr in 2012. That distance ranks him 20th among IC4A eligible throwers.
Senior Christian Lupica captured the lone title of the day for the Bison with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. He crossed the line in 14.32 seconds, besting second-place Taylor Andrews from Patriot League rival Army by three-tenths of a second. Bucknell junior Grant Reynolds took fourth in the field of 31 runners.
Lupica also anchored Bucknell's 4x100 relay team that finished as the runner-up out of 18 teams. Junior Daniel Gevirtz, Reynolds and senior Kevin Tapper joined him on the team that posted an IC4A-qualifying time of 41.74. The race was won by a team from the University of Buffalo.
"Both teams had big improvements from last week's Colonial Relays," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. "We still have to clean up a few areas so that we will have a balanced team at leagues in three weeks, but it seems to be coming along."
The Bison will be back at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium for the Bucknell Team Challenge, a one-day event, on Saturday.
