LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's track and field team won nine events on its way to a first-place finish at the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison won their home event for the first time in three years after finishing as the runner-up in each of the past two seasons.
The Bison dominated the eight-team event with 195 points. Binghamton and Towson tied for second with 98 points, while Duquesne was fourth with 95.
“Both the women and the men's teams had a good number of nice performances,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “Some people seem to be set up nicely for leagues in two weeks, while a few others need some fine tuning. Our 35-person lineup is coming very close to being set.”
Sophia Nnadi placed in the top three in three events for Bucknell. She finished first among 26 throwers in the discus with a distance of 141-4. She was the runner-up behind teammate Abigail Brundage in the shot put with a heave of 44-11 ½, and took third in the hammer throw. Brundage's winning throw in the shot put went 45-2 ½.
Bucknell swept the throwing events as Meg Sangimino finished first and qualified for the ECAC Championships in the javelin with a throw of 137-5. Dayna Simone's best throw went 136-6 and placed her second.
Kim Nagotko led the Bison sprinters with a title in the 200-meter dash and a runner-up finish in the 100. She crossed the line in 24.68 in the 200m and 12.21 in the 100m.
The Bucknell middle distance and distance runners were paced by three athletes who won their respective events. Reagan Cerney finished first among 25 runners in the 800m with a time of 2:13.87. Sarah Chandler won the 27-runner 1,500m in 4:35.84, with teammate Katie Jessee finishing two spots back in third. Elizabeth Sheprow topped seven other runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 11:08.87.
Jen Silvestri ran under 62 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight week, taking second with a time of 1:01.62. Kafilat Oladiran was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.65 seconds.
Other notable performances by Bucknell included a runner-up finish by Montana DiPietrantonio (3,000m), and third-place finishes by Allison Sharkey (400m), Lauren Hudson (high jump) and Rebekka Vuojolainen (pole vault).
Bucknell added wins in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
The Bison will send some athletes to the Penn Relays, to be held on April 23-25, and others to the Bloomsburg Invitational April 25.
