Track and Field Turns in Quality Results on First Day of Bison Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell opened competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday with some great distance races under the lights at Christy-Mathewson Memorial Stadium. The event's first day, which also included multiple field events, saw both the Bison women and men turn in solid performances.
"It was a very successful day one for the Bison," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. "We had numerous personal records or season bests and a number of IC4A-ECAC qualifiers. The competition was great and we hope to keep the momentum going for tomorrow."
On the women's side, sophomore Kate Scott finished second out of 32 in the 5,000-meter run. She qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 16:52.80, which is the second-fastest time in Bucknell history. Scott has also qualified for the ECACs in the 10,000m this season.
Senior Kate VanNess also qualified for the ECAC Championships, taking 15th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:06.66. Freshman Brennan Sharkey won the unseeded race with a time of 38:27.26.
Two throwers exceeded ECAC-qualifying marks. Junior Dayna Simone's throw of 138-8 placed her sixth in the javelin and moved her into fifth on the program's all-time list. Junior Sophia Nnadi was fifth in the discus with a throw of 141-7.
Senior Laddie Trees led the Bison men with a runner-up finish in the javelin. His throw of 207-4 was over five feet better than third place. Penn State's Ryan Kerr threw 212-0 to win the event.
Senior Andrew Garcia-Garrison made his outdoor debut this season, taking sixth out of 47 in a loaded field in the 1,500-meter run. He finished in an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:46..
Zach Williams had an impressive showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman took third of 32 with a time of 9:22.96.
The final day of the Bison Outdoor Classic begins with the pole vault at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and concludes with the men's 4x400 relay at 5:25 p.m.
