UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Freshman Christine Bendzinski highlighted Bucknell's final day of competition at the Penn State National Invitational on Saturday, running the second-fastest 1,000-meter in school history on her way to a third-place finish.
Competing against eight other runners in the invitational segment of the 1,000, Bendzinski crossed the line with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:50.68. The only two runners to finish ahead of Bendzinski both represented Georgetown.
Also cracking the program's top-ten list was the 4x400 relay team of sophomore Allison Sharkey, junior Jenn Silvestri, junior Chrissy Haney and senior Kim Nagotko. The group turned in an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:48.12, good enough for fifth all-time. They were second out of 12 teams at Penn State, finishing behind Syracuse.
Other notable finishes for the Bison included Deanna Godby (fifth in the mile), Chrissy Haney (sixth in the 500m) and Kim Nagotko (eighth in the 200m). All three ran the fastest time by a Bison runner this season in their respective events.
17TH ANNUAL BISON OPEN
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Competing on the final day of the 17th Annual Bison Open at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday, freshman Efe Agege also moved into second on Bucknell's all-time list. She was the champion in the triple jump with a leap of 39-6 ½, while her teammate Carly Reiner was third with a jump of 36-9.
Joining Agege as individual champions were Jamie Kenney, Kylie Pearse and Lauren Hudson. Jenny topped a field of 22 runners in the 500m, while Hudson was first out of 18 athletes in the high jump. Pearse led a trip of Bison runners who took the top three spots in the 1,000m, with Kathleen Fitzgerald and Betsy Edinger finishing right behind her.
Coming through with runner-up finishes for the Bison were Elyse Petaaway (400m), Brennan Sharkey (3,000m), Kim Lapszynski (long jump) and Sophia Nnadi (weight throw).
Bucknell will again send runners to two separate events next weekend, as one group of athletes will go to the Youngstown Invitational and another will compete in Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational. Both events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Comment from Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner about both events
“It was a great weekend to be a Bison. I was proud of how aggressive our athletes were at Penn State and most of them handled that environment quite well. Obviously the school records in the men's DMR and mile were the highlights, but I was also pleased with a lot of other areas, especially the field events at the Bison Open. We got exactly what we were hoping for this weekend and are looking forward to a great travel weekend competing against a lot of Midwest schools.”
