UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Running her first 5,000-meter of the season, sophomore Kate Scott shined for Bucknell on the first of two days of competition Friday night at the Penn State National Invitational. She competed in the invitational portion of the race and took 15th in a loaded field.
Runners from Johns Hopkins and Georgetown were the only two to finish ahead of Scott, who crossed the line in 17:11.05. Not only was that time good enough to qualify her for the ECAC Championships, but it was also the third-fastest time in program history.
"Scott had a great day, running the third-fastest time in school history," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. " She is really developing into a great distance runner."
The Bison will look to add to Scott's success as they pick up competition on Saturday.
"A few of our athletes for a little star struck, but this experience will make them better in the future," commented Donner.
17th ANNUAL BISON OPEN
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell recorded two titles on the first day of competition at the 17th Annual Bison Open on Friday at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Senior Yanelis Mestre was the lone individual champion for the Bison, who also took first in the distance medley relay.
Mestre shared the crown in a field of 18 athletes in the pole vault. She posted her best mark of the season, clearing 11-3 ¾ on her first attempt. Senior Kristin Sundy was fourth in the event.
Junior Abigail Brundage took third out of 33 in the shot put and also cracked the program's top-10 list. Her toss of 43-5 ¼ topped her previous season best by over half a foot, and puts her eighth on the all-time list. Junior Sophia Nnadi was fourth in her first competition of the season.
Emily Ryan, Carli Lucke and Kyle Stewart all qualified for Saturday's final in the 200-meter dash with their preliminary times on Friday.
